Thoughts? I would've preferred to see Kane stay in the U21s until after the summer although he does deserve the chance to step up.

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Manchester City).
Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).
Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Fabian Delph (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Manchester City), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Its about time Harry Kane was given a shot. I just hope he's not another Michael Ricketts, on top of his game for his club, fucking dismal for his country. I dont think it will come to that and i reckon Kane will be a challenge to Rooney and Sturridge

Wouldn't he be better off in the U21s? I think they should keep that group together for the Euros.

He should start with rooney up top. I can see where you're coming from, but you have to reward his form. Wellbeck does well for england, but hasn't been prolific for arsenal, 2 in his last 15 games, sturridge is still coming back to fitness (3 in 12 since his return in Jan), Lambert isn't playing regularly or scoring 3 in 32 apps this season, Rooney is a shoe in. When you consider all that what kind of message would it send out if Kane (26 from 42) was ignored and left with the U21's?

He should definitely go to the euro's if they get there.

Austin and Ings are knocking the door too.

I agree with you CJ, at the end of every failure at major tournaments the talk is always of restructing fromgrass routes upwards, I think by keeping players like Kane at u21s for major tournaments you give what we hope to be the national team in 4-5 years more time to learn and grow together.

The Spain team of '08 '10 '12 all came through the youth ranks for their country together, granted it helps that a lot of them came though the Barcelona youth ranks together also but the team spirit which appears to be lacking in our national side is born from competing in and doing well in youth tournaments.

Its still what 15 months till France '16 so no rush to get him in, if he carries this seasons form into next season he will be at the Euros no doubt so no need to rush!

Players i dont get:
1) Jones - never rated him but he plays for Man Utd so he gets called up
2) Townsend - Again not sure why he warrents a call up
3) Walker - really?..

As for Kane, he was definately entitled to the call up as long as he plays. If he doesnt then he should have been in the U21 squad. Defo agree with CJ's comments on this

Jones they will say he is versatile but I don't think you really need that in an England squad with at least two players for each position.

They've already qualified. Why not join the senior squad after that?

Hadn't realised they'd already qualified. Why wait? If he's the best english goalscorer and would improve the england squad, why would you leave him out? Why have an inferior player picked ahead of him? I would start him. I've not heard a decent argument against picking him. He needs to play though, otherwise it would be a waste.

Again, I fully agree that he (and anyone else eligible) should play in the finals.

The thing is the senior team qualified for France as soon as the groups were drawn (same as the Swiss) which shows how stupid the situation is. The U21 games are arguably more important to the long term future of the national set up especially with the tourney in the summer. If the squad do well there Kane could well be one of many that would be in the squad in 2016.

it does seem as though missing the U21 Euros will be more down to club than him making an appearance on this current England squad. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31978988 I would say that his inclusion in the 2016 squad will be decided more by his club form than what he does for the U21s. Like i said early, he should definitely go to the tournament, like wise the others that are eligible (e.g. Shaw and Sterling). do you think they should be in the U21's instead of the full squad?

Not Sterling as he hasn't been involved within that set up for some time. However Shaw has been. With regard to Spurs I was under the impression U17-U21 tourneys were part of the designated FIFA calendar and clubs can not refuse if a player wants to go.

I doubt the clubs can flat out refuse, its probably more the clubs and managers putting pressure on the individuals to withdraw themselves.

They have not already qualified. Hodgson would be stupid to omit the leading scorer in the Premiership. He does not need 'grooming', he is the finished article. He is the best English goal-scorer, better than Rooney and miles better than Welbeck.

I'm obviously missing something here, how does that work? Do you mean that we've got an easy group and couldn't possibly mess it up enough to not qualify?

Yeah. The format for the senior Euros is ridiculous. Top two qualify along with the best 3rd place team (minus results against 6th place teams).

There are 53 nations going for 23 spots. Once you take out the rubbish that haven't got a hope in qualifying (San Marino, Luxembourg, Andorra, etc) you're not left with many that couldn't qualify. Both ourselves and Switzerland were given a easy passage through. Even though the Swiss have done their best to make things interesting with a shocker against Slovenia and loss against us they'll still almost certainly finish second.

This is why I would've prefered Kane to stay with the U21s for the Euros this summer. They've got a real chance of doing well and would be valuable tournament experiance for him and several others in preparation for France and Russia. There's no reason why he couldn't go back into that squad after this window but surely wouldn't it have been better to keep that squad together?

How do you solve that problem, 2 stages of qualification with the 'big' teams coming in later? Can't see that happening as they fixed it this time round so the teams in bigger markets were in the groups with more games.

It's similar to the Sky / PL issue, while the grounds are still full and people are watching on TV those in charge don't care about anything else.

Platini is hell bent on making this tournament bigger, the positives is that we are likely to see some home nations appear, Wales, Scotland and even Northern Ireland are doing well. If Ireland beat Poland then they are back in the hunt. From that perspective it should be more entertaining but could mean a very long tournament however!

It would be good to see them all progress. It's just bad (or good depending on how you look at it) luck on our behalf. The World Cup could be 40 nations by the time Qatar comes around. With the final on December 18th it means they may end up having to start it in the summer anyway just fit it all in!
