Switzerland are defending well, and deep, so that doesn't help.

It is an awful game though.
Job done mentality from England I imagine...?

Anybody on here ever see Jimmy Greaves play ? I'm pleased for Rooney but not in Greavsie's class in my opinion.

Different types of players but I agree Rooney not in same class as greaves or charlton. Greaves could ghost round players and charlton majestic. Or am I just getting old?
I do remember a young willie Carr turning charlton and dumping him on his backside. Charlton had the grace to applaud Carr

I think I recall that game. But I've been lucky enough to have seen the likes of Greavsie,Best,Charlie Cooke,Bobby Charlton,Law,and do you remember Tambling and Ian Storey Moore ? All great players but to me Greaves had the lot.

Law always my favourite. But yes greaves was a special goal scoring machine

Wasn't the best game but we got the job done. Best atmosphere at Wembley since Scotland two years ago. Think the marks on the pitch were from the Challenge Cup Final.

I think rooney gets alot of stick from english fans , he is the blame boy for everything we fail at doing .
we can compare goal records all day , but i doubt that any of the strikers in our history have the amount of assists that rooney has .
he has 18 for england thats more than midfielders like gerrard and lampard , and career totals are 299 goals 145 assists , thats very impressive .
his workrate is second to none and in my eyes has always gave it all for england , sometimes it hasnt worked out but the team as a whole have been underwhelming for some time

I agree he gets a bad rep, if this was Beckham then everyone would be creaming over this record right now. I think there is something about his 'image' that people dont like but he is a England great in my eyes. Anyone who can score 50 for their country is a special player, 30 in competitive games so he scores when it counts.
Bobby Charlton etc will always be remembered in a great time for English football so you may not get a fair and reasonably thought through arguement on this one. Rooney has the ability to add another 10-20 goals to that record which could stand the test of time.
