Hmmmmm.......

England playing against superior opposition. Spain top of the world.

City playing against superior opposition. Southampton top of the league.

What was the difference? England set their stall out to harry and chase and close down space and never stop running. The Sky Blues didn't. The Sky Blues were lethargic, didn't harry, didn't chase, didn't close down. Didn't do any of these things in the first half.

Result? We were 2-0 down by half-time and didn't do the above things until the 2nd half and it was all but too late.

Bottom line? We can beat anyone in this league if we have the right mindset and play the right way. Of course we could have done all the above things and still lost against Southampton, but if you work hard, have the right tactics and chase and harry you always have a chance.

Lesson to be learned. The football may be better under Thorn but we have lost a bit of passion, desire and fight.

Its strange to think that Southampton used alot of Hoofball as well as play alot of football! Mixing it up works for the top team why don't we try it???I also agree with your last line! a spark is needed from some where!

Ive not long got back from the game, and I must admit I found myself making comparisons between these 2 games aswell.

England tried to play neat passes to match Spain's, but when they figured it was an impossible task, they went back to basics, putting 11 men behind the ball and trying to counter attack.

2 shots I noticed England had, and they scored from 1.

I must saying, Spain must be one of the best, if not the best, when it comes to playing a pass and move game. I really couldnt see England getting anything from the game, but with a bit of luck, we did it.

Spain also could have had a few goals; if only their players were in better form.

Good reception for Torres too :D

A bit of a strange comparison really. I am no fan of Thorn and no there seems liitle desire in the team but the truth is that we have no goals in the side. I actually do not blame Thorn for signing McDonald - he had to get a striker but he looks to be a disaster. No team has scored fewer goals all season and that is the one reason we ultimately will go down. Defence and midfield are no great shakes but they are competitive.

England let them pass tonight, but they did fantastic to stop the final ball.

I too was at the match . I thought England were outclassed and outpassed but defensively they were very good . We " parked the bus " had a line of 6 defenders , 3 midfielders and left Bent / Welbeck up front when Spain attacked . It wasn't pretty or productive but on this occasion Capello got it spot on . Smash and grab . Maybe Coventry should try it more often .
I haven't been to Wembley since the Charity shield in 88 , great stadium and facilities and the train goes straight from Warwick Parkway to the stadium .
2 crap burgers , 1 chips was £16 !

Why a strange comparison? And why the 'no goals in the side?' Fact is, if we had played like England did in the first half the score would have probably been 0-0 instead of 0-2 with a mountain to climb in the 2nd half. That was the point.

i picked up on it straight away because Southampton are the best team in our league and Spain are the best team in the world. Both games should have ended with defeats for the home team, but it proves that if you play the right way you always have a chance. Or is anyone saying that this City team can't work hard and chase down and break sweat?

And you wouldn't have settled for that last week for the Sky Blues and 1-0 victory?

On the flip side non of Englands back four made critical individual errors and in fact Lescott and jagielka were absolutely outstanding as was Parker, plus cole and johnson had excellent defensive games.

Even if we ha set up like England, we may well have conceded due to our players in ability to play 90 mins without making stupid errors.

I can see what your trying to do, and tactically last night was spot on, but it was also reliant k. The back four and Parker having almost flawless performances.

sorry that wasn't really a comment on the thread just a general comment on the England game which nearly caused me to pull all my fingernails out its was so dull.

as far as the city are concerned I'd take a win at any cost!

What I was trying to do is to prove that you always have a chance in these sorts of games. It's the lower league club FA cup tie mentality when playing bigger clubs. Think that is what we need right now.

Minimum requirement from here now in;

Grit
Determination
Hard work
Fight
Chasing of lost causes
Putting bodies on the line
Harrying of the opposition

If we do this we have a chance. Unfortunately I have seen very little of this this season. As I say, minimum requirement.

I agree with you Otis. The problem is I look at our squad and I don't see many players with those characteristics - McPake has but is rubbish when not fit, keogh is.......juke is......Thomas works hard... I'm scraping the barrel now.

Did put question marks against the names! :D

Do think he chases and harries and never stops running. Good job the stadium is an arena, otherwise he would be half way down the A45 by now.

TBH its all about putting it in the back of the net. Spain didnt England did. So fair play on Englands part. Does not matter how many shots, possesion etc.

City just dont have that ability to keep goals out. And they dont have enough quality to create and score enough. Sure fire of a team struggling.

Oh and yes England have only lost about 4 in the last 40 games.
