Football v Rugby Union (3 Viewers)

Went to Walsall Saturday, rugby sunday. So I am comparing the 2 experiences really. Gate at Walsall just under 6000, 15000 at the rugger. Was behind the goal not far from the corner were there were a few city fans in the other stand, all match I was being eye-balled by fat looking to be tough guy stewards and about half a dozen coppers all seemed to be looking my way, we score and as fans were cheering a steward was pushing and shoving what I would say were quiet young supporters 15/16 and yes the old bill managed to seem fit to eject one, perhaps arrested him don't really know and then continue to stare at us. At half time I went down and asked one copper why he was staring at me, he looked sheepish to be honest but didn't answer, but after half time never looked my way at all ?

At the rugby there has been a 28000 gate and 15000+ gate, I haven't seen one copper in the ground, why ?

Because football fans can't handle their beer? I'd love to watch ccfc play on a nice day with a cold beer!

I've never had an issue with stewards. Then again I've never felt the need to give it loads to one and then wonder why I get kicked out...

You do have a point Nick, a dipstick behind me was just shouting pointless obscenities willy-nilly and shit himself when I asked him to stop. I can swear with the best of them, but with nippers around, no. I don't think it's all to do with beer though, I think it's a mind set and for some reason another brain gets into their heads for 90 minutes.

It's the untouchable mindset, If I shout abuse at somebody I should expect it back with a punch and should expect that.

Didnt go to Walsall but went toPort Vale where we were swarmed with police at the pub ,the bus into the ground ,the station annd the train on the return journey to Nuneaton. Also went to the 2 rugby games . Never saw a copper either . The last non policed proper football game at the Ricoh about a dozen 15 year olds tried to attack the away coaches . Football is a great game but has baggage

i think we already know the answer , its simply the overly passionate nature of football supporters , football appears to be a far more territorial sport where supporters will vigorously defend their teams , lets not beat about the bush though in rugby league there is crowd violence , especially the hull derby .

Agreed, Football is still suffering from the tribal mentality. This is your club, you die for them and hate local rivals etc etc. Rugby seems different in that they support a team but dont have the same aggresive rivalry with their local teams and will just go to watch a game.

You take the football fan out of that arena and put him watching test match cricket, then he doesnt bahave the same way even though he has been on the piss for the entire day. Never seen any trouble watching England but has the same/similar banter to football.

Sadly we are still living in the 80's, this is not acceptable behaviour but generally more expected behaviour by some lot which is the tragedy.

It’s because a small minority of idiots have spoilt it for the majority. The Police and particularly overzealous stewards now treat everyone as a potential thug or criminal.

This has pissed me off for years and one reason why I now prefer to watch rugby where you get treated like adults. If you treat people as idiots and thugs then that’s the sort of behaviour you can expect in return.

Surely you just treat people as you would wasn't to be treated? You walk around with a chip on your shoulder against the world then the world will be against you.

Yes you're quite right in everything you say Nick. The problem I have is not particularly with the Police but stewards who have no capacity to think or make decisions. They have a fixed remit and treat everyone the same as opposed to taking every person or situation on their merits. At my age, I really do object to being searched before entering a football stadium for example.

It's so refreshing to see no police and only a couple of friendly, helpful stewards at The Butts and to be able mingle freely anywhere in the ground with a pint of beer.

I think that the 2% of football fans that can't behave with respect for others ruin it for the other 98%. A further 2-5% get dragged into things.
The 2% have been described as "passionate"...& it's been suggested on this thread that rugby fans aren't so passionate. I dispute that. I think they direct their passion constructively...
Wouldn't surprise me if the 2% of trouble causers at football are shit in bed as they have exhausted all their passion.

Ah. So they weren't even looking at you - they were keeping an eye on the muppet behind you? Hence you got a blank look when you confronted the copper at half time probably.

It can be easily summed up with the close up TV image (particular with corners) of the average football touchline fan, face contorted with anger/rage, vile language, derogatory hand motions, vilifying and booing star internationals - and these are the "grown ups" of our society !!

What an example to our younger fan base - so until these cretins are removed from grounds or isolated this uncomfortable atmosphere will prevail I am afraid.

The issue I have Nick is body search, bag search and not being able to bring in your own bottle of water for example. It's standard practice at football stadiums. If only stewards were given some sort of discretionary powers over mature gentlefolk.

Very true Johnnie, but it can even be seen on the pitch.

Most games in football a referee gives a decision that one team dont like, and they surround him, pushing and shoving, in his face shouting screaming and sometimes swearing. Kids watch this and think its acceptable.

In Rugby, the referee, unless speaking to a certyain player, will only speak to the Captain, and will send any other players who wish to say something away, or their team will concede a penalty or they could end up off the pitch on a yellow card. They respect the referee and therefore create a different impression to those watching, than that of footballers.

I like both games, am a football fan first and foremost, but cant help admit that most footballers act like pricks around the referee on the pitch, and this can rub off on impressionable fans watching.

I usually take a bag with a tablet in, hats and gloves, sweets and a drink. Yes they have a quick glance but I've never been body searched or had drinks taken away.

Like you say it's standard in football, the same as not being able to drink in the ground, I wish I could have a pint watching the game but like with most things a small percentage ruin it for the rest.

i was with someone once who took his dads ashes in a plastic bottle to the game as it was one of his last wishes. The steward wouldn't let him in with it.

It comes to something when you cant take a bottle of pop to the game

Exactly it's down to respect, when you have people abusing the stewards for no reason what do they expect when they get dragged out?

If you go up to a man in a pub and start shouting abuse in his face you are going to get a slap, so why so it to stewards?

When I was younger if you abused a bouncer you would get a slap or had to back it up. Now bouncers can't do anything like that you see them get terrorised by 16 year olds that are 7 stone wet through.

Even though I am an ardent and loyal(apart from Shitfields) City fan , I sometimes go up the Boro(sunny nunny) as they are local to me.I am not a great fan of Rugby apart from internationals , but next Saturday as my beloved Sky Blues are not playing , am meeting some of the lads ( city fans ) for a day out in Cov and taking in the Cov RFC game, more for the fellowship than the Rugby, but hope they win.No doubt I will down a few ciders before the curry and train back to Nunny.

The FA, FIFA whoever should mic up the refs and linesmen, have what they say to the players etc heard by the crowd, then enforce the rules of the game. After two weeks there would be a shift in the 'oh it's part of the game' attitude. Players sent off for abussing the ref, no manager would put up with it. If I swore at someone at work I'd be sacked. Excepting it just shows how weak the people who run the game are.

Random searches & bag searches are standard at rugby & concerts of all shapes sizes & types in today's world.
