According to the FA site it was 1981 and it was then modified to the version you're referring to in 1983.

Thanks Disorganised, for all your effort and research, but I somehow don't think that's the rule we're talking about.
Law XII - Fouls and Misconduct -1983
Introduction of the four-step rule:
...from the moment the ball comes under his (the goalkeeper's) control, he takes more than four steps without releasing the ball into play and - having released it - he touches the ball again before it has been touched or played by another player...

In fact, I don't know what this is referring to as, if I read this correctly, it is saying that after 4 steps the ball has to be put into play and if he touches it again before another player (from either side apparently) it is a foul. Have you ever seen this rule in effect?

The rule I am talking about is when a goalkeeper gets the ball in the box, he can only move with the ball in hand by bouncing the ball every 4 steps. (I also remember that an opposing player was allowed to touch the ball when it is momentarily on the ground while being bounced. Crazy, I know!) The goalkeeper could, technically, run all round the box using this method for as long as he wanted to.

I gotta feeling it was way before the 80's. Just look at some of the YouTube footage from the 70's and you'll see this bouncing rule was not in effect then. Curiouser and curiouser!

I remember playing when this rule change came in - so I definately remember it.

I do remember the bouncing rule as well, and I think you're right, it was a long time ago - I'll see what I can find, but I think it replaced the 30 second rule - where goal-keepers had to play the ball after 30 seconds.

OK - I've found this about how the 4 step rule came nto being - this dates it as the early 1960's and was done to counteract gamesmanship and time-wasting.

Brilliant Disorganised. I commend your investigative skills....and patience. It confirmed my recollection of it being early 60's though. What a fun time goalies had back then eh?

A question for all, who originally got you into football and the sky blues. For me it was my cousin, my dad and mum were not football fans so it was my cousin who influenced me and took me to city games.

what about everyone else?

That Villa 0-0 was my first game too, think Villa hit the bar, but all a bit vague.

First game I really remember was the 4-0 v Liverpool, school was brilliant on the Monday!

1st game i remember proply was a 1-1 draw at home v everton in 1986 pickering scored for us and ian marshall got a late equalizer.

best game i ever saw was later that season 4-3 at home v spurs decenber 27th 1986 i still remember the date! was quality they wore our away kit, a right ding dong of a game regis scored that last minute header playing a 1 2 with the cross bar i was sat on me dads shoulders at the top corner of the west terrace and he launched me about 10 feet when we scored that! good job we was stood where we were at the time or the roof would have took me head off!

Too long ago for me to remember!!

First game I truly remember was against Newcastle in August 1985, was in the Spion Kop. We were 1-0 up in the dying minutes when my uncle made the decision to leave early to beat the crowds. On the way out, I heard a massive roar. Once we were outside, I heard a second roar.

We lost 2-1.

I've never left a game early ever again.

Believe it or not mine was not a who but a what...
I was about 10 years old. I was never really into playing football and have never been all that good.
My first interest in football came from trying out Champ Man 2! I had the demo on my old PC and played it non stop until the six months restiction period in the demo game was over then I would start again lol.
I then bought CM 96/97 and it was amazing.
I used to consider myself to be a young statto and could talk about players from all over the world. It was from my love of CM that I suggested to a friend at school that we try going to a game. At that stage I had no real affiliation to the City just knew who the players were.
He never really got that interested but I was hooked and even for a short while used to go on my own. Whenever I hear Mr Blue Sky it just reminds me of how excited I used to get at the start of each game as I watched from the McDonalds Family stand.

I was a steward in that stand around that time!

my first game was 1990 being born in dagenham, essex i was supposed to support west ham but being a rebel..yeah right... i decided to pick someone a bit different, so in 1988 i decided on coventry mainly because 1987 was the first fa cup final i was really interested and wanted coventry to win and i really liked the the sky blue kit. My dad was never really into football so i did not see a coventry match till 1990 when a neighbour who supported tottenham got me two tickets to see coventry v tottenham..the only problem was i had to sit in the spurs end and watch us lose 3v2. After that we tried to go to as many london games as we could..a highlight being that though wearing a coventry shirt we got admitted to the arsenal home end by mistake and we had to be escorted to the away end by police.
I no longer live in dagenahm but am still an away game fan for the most part only going to coventry twice a year.
