About spot on but Sheaf will be gone and Eccles will be in his position.Just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are for formations next season?
I’ve been wondering whether a 4-4-2 could work well for nearly all our players? I think Sheaf is best when he’s not the sole DM and also think it would suit Van Ewijk, Torp and Mason-Clark.
Wright, Simms
Mason-Clark, Sheaf, Torp, Sakamoto
Bidwell, Kitching, Thomas, Van Ewijk
New GK
Thoughts?
Villa have done quite a bitDoes anyone play 4-4-2 anymore?
I think a change is coming, just based on what Robins said in his end of season interview. Not worth trying to guess what it is until we make some more signings and see where they fit.

Forgive my lack of tact here, but isn’t it a bit fecking early to be planning formations when we’ve just hit pre-season?
Anything can happen in the next few months…Sheaf may not even be here, and Bidwell has been rumoured to be off for a while now.
Why are we trying to discussing this? Let's wait and see what our targets are and which ones we land.
I really hope Eccles isn’t still a regular starter next season, especially if he’d be taking over Sheaf’s role, he’s really not good enough for such an important position.About spot on but Sheaf will be gone and Eccles will be in his position.

You mean like a flat 3, not with a 10, right?433 and 442
Yes, I was asking why the OP wanted to discuss formations, when the season has only just finished, and we will invariably lose/acquire players in the first 11. Which will, you know, affect any plans made for specific formations with specific players in mind.Have two people really asked why somebody is trying to discuss football on the forum? Gonna be a long fucking 2/3 months if people don't want to discuss such things.
Robins will be recruiting to the formation he wants to play, not the other way around. It may change should things fail, but he will be doing exactly what the OP is doing and thinking how does he want to set up.
Good to see the arguments are starting nice and early - good effort.Yes, I was asking why the OP wanted to discuss formations, when the season has only just finished, and we will invariably lose/acquire players in the first 11. Flap around all you want, join in if you must, I found it worthy of a rebuke. So calm down.

IDK there's enough blue on blue going on in the standing and fz prices thread!Good to see the arguments are starting nice and early - good effort.
No I think it’s the right way up? Strikers at the top, GK at the bottom?I think your team is upside down.
You’ve presented them running away from you rather than towards you.
It's coming back into fashion a bit more, especially out of possession.
I was just wondering if people thought that the formations we tried this season were any good or not? I also can’t see us buying a shit load of players for some reason, I reckon at most we’ll get a new LB, new GK, new CB and maybe a midfielder or two but I don’t see how that really changes how we set up. I think you can discuss tactics before we know all our signings tbh, our team is really not going to change that much, particularly with the way Doug wants the club to be a successful business.Yes, I was asking why the OP wanted to discuss formations, when the season has only just finished, and we will invariably lose/acquire players in the first 11. With EMC primarily being a wide left player and Sakamoto being wide right, it leaves a massive amount of space in the middle of the park for Sheaf and Torp to cover, personally I'd sooner see another attacking midfielder in there instead of 2 out and out strikers.Just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are for formations next season?

Fair enough, I was just giving my opinion, that I thought it might be a bit early for planning to have certain players etc.I was just wondering if people thought that the formations we tried this season were any good or not? He is a holding midfielder. His job is to protect the back four not create per se although this season he has at times been asked to do that more.I really hope Eccles isn’t still a regular starter next season, especially if he’d be taking over Sheaf’s role, he’s really not good enough for such an important position.
Eccles is one of those players that works hard and is very consistent but never has any end product and doesn’t have enough vision or skill to be able to create the sort of chances we need in order to win games 3-0 or 4-0. I really hope we get an upgrade on his position next season.
Fair enough, I get that Eccles has some qualities but I just don’t rate him, I think he’s okay at most things but not brilliant at anything. He is a holding midfielder. His job is to protect the back four not create per se although this season he has at times been asked to do that more.
Eccles is a top player and we are lucky to have him.

I’m not saying our midfielders should be able to score 40 yard wonder-goals but his shooting is pretty poor when a key opportunity presents itself. I don’t have anything personal against the guy, he seems like a nice bloke and works really hard but I think if we want to be solidly in the top 4 next season then we should be aiming to do better than “feeling lucky to have him”. (I know loads on here will disagree with me but that’s sound, I just genuinely think we can/need to do better.)
I don't know, compared to Collins...Eccles has been an integral part of 2 fairly successful seasons, he's also a very good RWB.
To say you don't want him to take the Sheaf role is like saying you don't want him in goal, it won't even be considered.
As long as he shields that back 4 well, i dont care if he gets 0 goals and 0 assists. Eccles-Sheaf-Torp would win us the league as a midfield 3 but i think we will lose Sheaf.Fair enough, I get that Eccles has some qualities but I just don’t rate him, I think he’s okay at most things but not brilliant at anything.

Sell him to Ipswich get morsy as part of the deal and sell palmer that’s a good startThere's always an excuse for Sheaf. He is the most overrated player we've had for about 20 years. If there's a buyer for a good fee then sell him. The ridiculous fees people are talking about can go a good distance to building our team for next season.
