Gael signs contract extension! (2 Viewers)

OSB - you seem to have a handle on this player valuation in the accounts thing and I understand that the value of the player ie his transfer fee is divided over the length of his contract but what happens if his contract is renewed? ie Bell signed for £500k on 3 year contract so value written off and he signs a new 4 year extension what is shown in the accounts? We were discussing that surely the only reason fror giving McPake and Bell new deals is some sort of accounting fiddle as from a footballing point of view it makes little sense.

Well technically I think the contract extension is actually a new contract - which would be one that did not include a transfer fee we had paid. The Original transfer fee would have been written down to nil - or would be over the original contract period. The new contract extension doesnt kick in until the old one ends so my reading of it would be that there was no value to it in the accounts. Dont think it adds any value to the published accounts

However it may well add value to the potential player sales value pool. Longer contract makes harder to prize away from the club and may add a premium to any potential sale. Look at any accounts at what they say is nearly always never the true value - eg a football club will have players worth 100's of thousands valued at nil, others they bought at £500K worth £2m or vice versa. So the accounting worth is different to potential sale worth. Trouble is there has to be a common basis of valuation in the accounts and the prudent one is to value at the cost of the player written down over the life of the contract for that player. Otherwise you would be revaluing every 5 minutes and on a best guess basis

What they might be doing is fixing the salary costs for the next 3 to 4 years either because they can offer lower deals right now or because it locks in costs before the new rules come in from the football league. Got to agree neither would be high on my priority list of new long term deals from a football point of view

@OSB: I thought (admittedly from Football Manager experiences lol) that when a player signed a deal like this the new terms started straight away. Hence I could understand the financial sense if Bell and/or McPake took a wage drop. I'd imagine similarly that Gael would be on a bit more money now (and rightly so as he wasn't a first teamer when he signed the last contract).

This great news but what is happening with Sammy Clingan, his contract runs out this season.

dont be fooled this is about keeping his wages down,,, he could be worth 20 g a week in 2 years. same with turner.. whats he on? 5 a week? brum will pay him 10, in 2 year a prem side will pay him 20. to 30. its good business for the club if he remains decent but we have seen too many good players go bad at our cub. at least this way when we go into league 1 he will be the sort of young gun we need.

What do you mean? We offered Clingan a new contract at the same time as Bell, McPake and McSheffrey. If the rumours from Leeds that he wants £15k/week and turned down their offer of £10k/week are true he probably won't sign, but that brings us back to the old debate of when do you stop throwing money at players and decide the club is bigger than they are.

maybe it does just, i dont know and you are very likely right shmmee , but the value of the old contract that had the transfer fee would immediately be £ nil so the principle is the same - no value to the new contract on the balance sheet

I can't see Sammy being too greedy. He's not really got the grounds. He helped a team get into the Championship and since then he's been the shining light in two failing sides!!

Im not even worried If Sammy goes next season, I'm more than comftable having Gael playing there

Delighted at this if he shines in the next few games im sure clubs will come sniffing around january maybe sisu are looking at this where they extend his contract and can barter more for him in jan transfer window, i wouldnt put it past them.

He will not leave Coventry for quite a few years unless forced out
trust me.
