would I be right to say that the last time we went into the final league game of the season with something positive at stake was when we played Forest at HR in 77-78 with a chance of qualifying for the UEFA cup?

Close but not quite right. Last game of 77-78 season was away at Bristol City. At the time the 1-1 draw likely be enough to qualify for UEFA cup. Two pieces of Jigsaw remained however, Livepool had to win European Cup and Arsenal had to beat Ipswich in FA Cup final. I am afraid only Liverpool won so we missed out.

Next time I went to Bristol was 34 years later in 2012 and disastrous 3-1 defeat virtually to ensure relegation from level 2.

so Forest was the last home game? I know they won the league that day. Even now, 40 years later, Peter Shiltons display stands out as a goal keeping master class.

Yes just checked and it was last home game. I can still see that save viewing it from the West End looking towards the Kop end. It was a fab save.
I knew that we tailed off towards the end of that season but stats are worse than I thought. Only won one of last 8 unfortunately. One more win would have qualified for UEFA. Shame We were one of the most exciting teams that year and should have been in top 4.

1 Nottingham Forest 42 25 14 3 69 24 45 64
2 Liverpool 42 24 9 9 65 34 31 57
3 Everton 42 22 11 9 76 45 31 55
4 Manchester City 42 20 12 10 74 51 23 52
5 Arsenal 42 21 10 11 60 37 23 52
6 West Bromwich Albion 42 18 14 10 62 53 9 50
7 Coventry City 42 18 12 12 75 62 13 48

Why are we playing in level 4 now?

I didn't realised we'd tailed off so badly either.
Still, it was all going to be OK because there was no way Ipswich were going to win the FA cup!!

Yes I remember going to Bristol City - a very different circumstance to the last game the prior season!

I was talking to someone last week about that save by Shilton from Fergie's header. I said it reminded me of the great save by Gordon Banks from Pele in the 70 World Cup. This guy told me that he had met Peter Shilton once and mentioned this fabulous save and that Shilton was genuinely pleased that someone remembered one of his saves and was talking to him about it. ( Surprised me as you would think Shilton is stopped all of the time by fans with memories of his games).
Off topic I know but one of my best memories of Shilton was the goal he conceded while playing for Leicester against Neil Martin in 1968 which ultimately lead to our survival for a third season in the old division 1.

I have exactly the same memory of Shilton’s save. I was also at the Bristol match which IIRC ended 1-1, I think Ian Wallace scored in front of our fans. I was stood at the opposite end of the ground with the home fans. It was carnage outside after the match which for 14 year old me left a lasting impression of Bristol.

97-98 We had a slim chance of qualifying for the UEFA cup. Could've also relegated Everton and Dublin could've won the golden boot outright with 1 more goal.

quiz question - without looking
in the year Dion won the golden boot, 3 other ex city players were also in the top 10 - who were they?

Does this definition of Ex include players playing for us that season because Huckerby had a few for us that season... and maybe Whelan as well if he was still with us.

Can't be sure of the answer but the very fact we are discussing it shows why we struggle with interest in the club in Coventry. It's so rare that anything interesting has happened. And I think that's all that fans want, we aren't glory boys just want the team to be competitive whatever league we are in. Look at how excited we are about the Division 4 play offs

Jarni then ! I remember being the one in the club shop that told them they could stop printing his name on the back of the shirts, as he had changed his mind - they genuinely didn't know, and I'm pretty sure they thought I was an oddball (trueish) and didn't really believe me.
