1939 when that photo was taken 2million cars were on the road and very often they were used sparingly.Today 38 million +.Another fact 1939 8,272 deaths last year 1560 still 1560 too many but going in the right direction hopefully.

Yeah i noticed that what became the flat car park next to the mercers looks to be a nice lawned park at that time

Quite possibly a Bowling Green, many large pubs/ Inns had Bowling clubs attached to them back then.
