Has Sammy Clingan been linked with anybody yet? (5 Viewers)

Sammy has not got a club yet. None of us knows what he has been offered or rejected. It is all speculation. To some their prejudice fills in the gaps with.. He's crap. He thinks he's worth more, nobody wants him.
No evidence, merely speculation.
If it makes people happy to have their prejudices confirmed, fine.
We shall see where he ends up.

But surely you can appreciate that he has been shocking for the last two seasons at least? He is a quality player but his carlessness and lack of initiative in a Cov shirt would rightfully lead City fans and prospective employers believing that he is a bit of a liability.

just to confirm I am not talking about Cranie or Keogh.

You are entitled to your opinion about Sammy. I think it is irrelevant in this case. Players move on when they think they can get a better deal elsewhere. Sammy hasn't got a better deal... Yet.
Time will tell if he succeeds or fails. It is in the nature of professional football at present.
Would you have been happier if he had been offered and accepted a new deal and was our captain now?
If not, I don't see the problem.

Sammy will sign for a team like Barnsley...those types of teams dont have big money for transfers, but love to pick up established players...he may find he'll have to take a cut in wages though

Clingan was awful at times last year, and went missing at exactly the precise times we needed him most, he only woke up slightly once Norwood came along and either he felt the burden lifted and allowed himself to play more freely or was given a kick up the backside by the way Norwood looked for / looked after the ball and actually pushed us forward.

My opinion is not irrelevant seeing as I reckon his poor quality in recent years could be the reason he has not got a deal when he is available on a free transfer.

Is it big headed that he thought he would get a deal when he hasn't? Is it complacency? Or is it simply that he's not as good as he thinks?

Note, dozens of players have no club yet and many will not until the transfer window closes.
FWIW I don't believe Sammy or Cranie were offered a contract for this season by SISU.

COVENTRY City captain Sammy Clingan has turned down the club's offer of a new contract - and will be leaving the Sky Blues in the summer on a free.

It is understood that Clingan turned down the contract City offered him earlier in the season – which former chairman Ken Dulieu revealed at the time was worth £8,000 a week to the midfielder.

The news mean that the Northern Ireland international will be leaving the club on a free transfer this summer when his contract at the Ricoh Arena.








Thorn confirmed: “I have spoken to Sammy. We have offered him a decent contract but he chose to turn it down, but that’s his prerogative.

"He’s been great but it’s highly unlikely that we’d have got anywhere near what he was asking for.

“We offered him a decent deal and he chose to wait until the end of the season and see what he can do so we wish him all the best.”

Clingan signed for the Sky Blues in the summer of 2009 for £650,000 after Norwich dropped into League One in what turned out to be a bad decision after the Canaries secured back-to-back promotions and are currently plying their trade in the top flight.

Elsewhere, striker Clive Platt is also due to have talks with the club about staying on next season.

However first team flop Freddy Eastwood is free to leave after four years, 113 league appearances and 17 goals since his £1.2million, £10,000-a-week move from Wolves.

And third choice goalkeeper Danny Ireland looks set for a return to Australia when his contract expires this summer after the 23-year-old has been set-back by illness and injury over the last 12 months.

I said some time ago that football is in a mess financially and that players will be lucky to find clubs at all and should be careful. Keogh due to his heroics did find a club who wanted him - back in the championship. Cranie has only just found a way in at Barnsley. Bigi was a different case.
Now Clingan can't get a gig either. Can't say I didn't warn of this.
Frankly I'd be surprised if he did not figure in the championship somewhere but if I was him and had a glimmer of a chance to return to us on £8k a week and be captain, leading the charge in league 1 where to all intense and ourposes he should be absolute quality then I'd jump at it.
I'd have him back for sure.

That's incredible. No wonder we are where we are. I assume £10k was a basic as well. To think Fat Freddy was on the same as Marlon King. Even when Freddy was in form, those two were a class apart!!

£8 a week sounds about right come to think of it! Corrected.

I think I'd have him back too. If we're doing well, he could be a calm, composing influence in the centre, picking passes for the other boys around him. Always available to receive the ball etc. He did go missing at times last season, mainly because it looked like he wasn't really up to being the scrapper that we needed, but I didn't really understand this 'Sideways Sammy' insult. His job was to retain possession, and let the rest of the midfield attack. Unfortunately, the rest of the midfield wasn't really up to it, and he didn't step up to fill the void either.

Whoever plays in centre midfield for City will get stick from fans here. The midfield is always under intense scrutiny. The diamond formation, the personnel, lack of width ... We always blame the midfield instead of looking at the bigger picture.

Clingan generally had a poor season last year and more was expected from the Club captain, senior pro and one of the highest earners. I think that was the commonly held view, rather than a witch hunt.

In seasons gone by, he has looked fairly assured in a quarterback style role and was certainly one of our best passers of the ball. Did last season's more patchy performance mean he didn't get enough credit for the good things he did do? Yeah, I would say so. Was it completely unwarranted? No, I don't think so. Wasn't great, would want a high wage, I wouldn't be inclined to have him back.

I think we've spent the £8k wages elsewhere people!

Dropped by Norn Iron now too, so he is.
