As you know Houch I have just got my state pension. I'm still working but reduced my hours a bit. Today a customer asked me where I've been as I was a couple of weeks late. She has a beautiful house and garden and always gets me doing jobs there. Anyway she said could I cut back some tall spiky plants that were growing up alongside her house on to her roof ? I went up the ladder to cut it back and one of the needle sharp ends jabbed me in the neck ! Drew a bit of blood and just missed a vein, it could have been serious. She got me a plaster to put on it and said leave it as it looks dangerous.Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.
.
Well, for example, the other day my wife and I went to Malvern and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a “parking ambassador” writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and said, 'Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?' He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi turd. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tyres.
.
So my wife called him a Shithead. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windscreen with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
.
.
Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus.
.
We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age.
I still go fishing, but not the dawn till dusk times that I used to do. 10 am until about 2.00 is about all I can manage nowadays. I get way too stiff and my dodgy knees have had it by then! As for 5-a-side, I carried on playing until I was 45 or 46 and then done some refereeing for about 18 months after that. No wonder my knees are shot away! Some years ago we decided to have a departmental 5 a side game of football. We played on and off for a couple of hours. Next day I could hardly walk and driving was so painful. At that point (probably mid fifties) made the decision to stick to fishing!
Houch. Have you watched the programme on the telly, Whitehouse and Mortimer go fishing ? I'm not a fisherman but love this programme. So funny and serious at times too as they have both had heart problems. They go to some great places, and as I love the outdoors it has given me ideas for breaks away.I still go fishing, but not the dawn till dusk times that I used to do. 10 am until about 2.00 is about all I can manage nowadays. Very kind of you Rob, but the pools I go to in Malvern (actually, it's Leigh Sinton), allow you to park literally right next to your swim and peg, so I just get what gear I need, out of the car when I'm ready. (First thing I set up is me chair! :joyfulHouch you have way to much gear now thats your problem with your fishing :shamefullyembarrased::shamefullyembarrased: i have a trolley going spare if you want it
Not seen this yet BBR, although I've seen it advertised. Is it still showing?Houch. Have you watched the programme on the telly, Whitehouse and Mortimer go fishing ? In my prison days I played table tennis all the time on association, that's when you're unlocked at night and let out to play games or watch the telly. I got good and often played for baccy and sweets. It was competitive and often ended up in punch ups. Those two Whitehouse and Mortimer had me and the wife in stitches !
I retired and have started table tennis - seems i am not too shoddy at it having spent a mispent youth playing it - love getting sweaty - we are playing older people than me and they are brilliant - still lots to learn !!

You know it's time to slow down when your body tells you it is.I'm in the strange position of not being old or young. Early 50's now. But still try to keep up with the youngsters without doing it on purpose. Still their age in my head.
Got talked into a game of badminton a few days ago with a teenager who plays all the time. Hadn't played for over 30 years. 90 minutes later still hadn't won a game. Temperature was in low 30's. Was swimming in my own sweat. Eventually won a game. Took a bit of time to get back into it. But was happy my fitness kept up to it. Also very surprised.
The next day my back had a massive disagreement with me. Hobbled around like an old man for a few hours.
When do you know it is time to slow down?
I found the hardest was diving down for the low shots then trying to get back up for the return. I still have good upper body strength and have a height advantage. And all my old injuries are on my left side. You know it's time to slow down when your body tells you it is.
Badminton used to be my game and I played into my late 30's but then gave it up as it is too hard on your back with all that reaching above your head.
Then I started exercising in my pool but keeping up the pool became too much work so it now lies empty. Now I just go for walks.
Make the most of your 50's because your 60's is when everything you did wrong (eating, sleeping, exercising) in the first 50 years catches up with you.
I don't know what happens in your 70's, but I'm about to find out.
Is that +/- 5 degrees?I started back with Badminton after many years away but it was pretty hard on my out of fitness body but table tennis is not so harsh so I continued with this and it is very enjoyable at my level !
I know what you mean, but where I played Badminton there were a couple of good players who could beat me almost every time.<snip>
I just can't bear the thought of a 17 year old beating me at anything. Don't like losing at anything.
As long as City don't take a zen approach and give them a gift!I know what you mean, but where I played Badminton there were a couple of good players who could beat me almost every time.
I took a more zen approach to life where I didn't mind losing if the other person was truly better.
I figured I'm giving them a gift - the pleasure of victory.
I would only get annoyed if I did something stupid when I knew I should have done better.
