Suffered from lack of service, looked OK, has a decent touch and gets stuck in. I think he'll do OK, don't remember him having a shot or a real chane today though.

He was poor imo, still only his first game anybody expecting him to make the step from league 2 to championship in the first game is unrealistic. Needs time to build up a partnership. Never really got in the game much.

You could tell he had not played much gametime looked way off the pace.......however it adds competition for places and O'Donovan looked much more lively when he came on almost scored with his first touch.

With Sheff coming back and arguably maybe Eastwood and Platt on their way back things are looking up!

Def lacked the killer instinct but that will come. The one chance he had, when he done well to stay onside then was played down the wing, i think he panicked, hence him bringing play to a hault and passing it backwards after doing the hard work! was almost like he'd been training with David Bell when I seen him pass it back I trust he will come good tho.

Between him and Jutkiewicz opposition center backs won't get a moment's peace, and he plays around the box. These two facts put him well ahead of any other striker bar Jukebox IMO.

Worst thing about him was that he wasn't getting in front of the defender for Juke's knockdowns and was waiting behind the defender for the ball to come on to him.

That could be just down to a lack of understanding though, but a forward does usually try to get in front of the defender to attempt to get to the ball first.

Poor tbh, looks to be lacking fitness, did better for the 10 odd minutes before he went off though

Very unfair comments. In the first half we had something like 60 of the possession but the attacking midfielders were none existant. How can you blame Mcdonald for the lack of service. Juke understands our way of playing and can cope now but Mcdonald still has to learn. Given a bit of time the two will form a decentpartnership BUT we desperately need an attacking midfielder because the gaps were massve

Hope you're not including me in that unfair comments remark? Cos if so I suggest you look at the highlights. the balls Juke was knocking down were pretty darn close to McDonald and he wasn't making any attempt to get the right side of the defender and was merely waiting for the ball to go past the defender.

As i say, maybe just down to a lack of understanding.

But who's slagging him off? Everyone is saying he did 'nothing' or 'looked off the pace' or 'lacked an understanding.'

Everyone is just commenting on how he performed today not if he is any good or not!

I thought he was getting into the right places most of the time, he looks quick too.

Today he did lack that sharpness, but overall I'm happy with what I seen of the lad.

One thing he did do was occupy defenders. It was noticeable how much more time and space Juke and especially Baker had to influence the game.

Wouldn't write him off just yet, he'll come good with a run of games. Remember he's not even played a pre-season friendly.

His touch and anticipation were very poor, and he didn't look match fit. Don't judge him on that game alone, though-he'll get better with time and fitness, he hasn't had a proper preseason. Although that said, Roy did more in his first minute on the pitch than Cody did all game!

Thorn talks about Cody being an "off the shoulder" player with pace, but that's exactly what Roy is meant to be too(just check the Hartlepool goals, 9 in 15 in L1!). Before now, Roy has played in a withdrawn role, behind and wide of Lukas. Today he came on as a direct replacement for Cody in a position slightly in advance of Lukas, and looked much more like he had in preseason.

The best thing about Cody signing so far is that it's influenced AT to change our shape slightly, giving us a threat in behind and opening up more space for the midfield to attack (eg Bakers goal). When O'Donovan came on he gave Lukas a zippy target for his lay-offs and flick-ons, looked like he had started to build an understanding with him, offered a much greater goal-threat than before now, and chased and harried defenders higher up the pitch. Pretty much what we signed Cody to do! If it means Roy gets to play in his best role when used, it's a nice side-effect.

He may not be an instant success or answer all our problems, but the signing of McDonald has had a positive impact not only in the more offensive shape of our play, but also in giving vital competition for places that has been lacking before now.

Fully agree with you on the change of shape with Cody in the team.
And I think it was for the better.

Nobody's writing him off and they are stupid if they do. Simply stating he played poor today. We will see how he is looking after 10-15 games he should have his match fitness back by that time.

Agree with many posters. Way off the pace and a long way off match fitness. Having said that the service wasn't fantastic particularly first half. Expect 4-5 games to sharpen him up. I've seen the video medley of 25 goals or so for the Gills last season and I'm hoping he can produce the goods for us.

Best thing about Cody today was that his arrival has made the team more inspired than we had been previously - there was more drive forward and more positive play in the attacking 3rd of the pitch. Felt that the team believed that his arrival meant that we had something to aim for and a more positive slant to the team. Much better team performance today and more crosses than I have seen for a long time!

He looked a little off the pace but I think the partnership with Juke (who was immense today) will grow and he willl be a great addition.

to be fair we aren't in the market for the sort of players who will light up their debut with a hat trick, see how he goes

A wee tad off the pace plus he looked a bit "sturdy" - anticipation and awareness will come with games plus (dare I say it) the shedding of a couple of pounds also = a good assett for the CCFC cause

Not the 'scintilating' debut some had wished for but he looked a little unfit and unsure of himself in this new surroundings.
It would be far to easy to suggest he did not make the step up very well. That would be silly and he needs match sharpness and fitness.
Think he will be good in a few games time....

Strangely O'Donovan made a difference when he replaced him today. His snap shot and some good running gave us a bit of impetus we lacked at that time.

Good sub by Thorn.

Loved Roy's sub performance, I really did. His run and shot was an absolute beauty, deserved a goal, and he was nearly as fast as Mifsud. Came from behind his man to get in front to the ball 3 times, and was invaluable in stretching Derby and preventing them from playing higher up the pitch.

You'd think it was Roy who'd just got back from a fitness camp rather than Freddy. Can Cody have the "Moldovan Effect" on our other strikers?

Bit bemused by a few comments from Wallace and others, think they must be trying to make themselves look like saints?

I don't think anyone on the entire thread has "slagged" McDonald off at all and I am struggling to see any "harsh" criticisms of him.

All most people are saying is that he lacked match fitness/sharpness - which Thorn said as well so is he slagging him off as well?
Think he will prove to be a valuable addition to a very small squad. On subject of Hussey thought he was supurb defensively and made some crucial tackles. I like the fact he always shows for the ball, just wish he would take a little bit off his crosses! Overall a very good game.

Need to carry this on away at Ipswich who are a funny side but can definitely be got at defensively!

McDonald needs games to get his fitness and sharpness back, and to build a partnership with Juke. Patience from supporters too.
