How important is McGoldrick? (1 Viewer)

Just musing over the above. McGoldrick is a million pound signing and is reportedly earning far more money than our wage budget will allow.

With this in mind we cannot afford him unless circumstance changed.

Forest also reportedly will want a fee which maked it unlikely we will sign him and almost certain they will not loan him for the season.

So we look stuck. Hypothetically how important is he? Let's say he would join but we had to let two players go - an experienced player and one of the younger players who would free up wages and allow us to make the signing?

If we had to let McDonald and Clarke go for example would it be worth it?

I would say yes.

McGoldrick would be a pivotal signing. I can still see McDonald coming good; but if he had to be expendable to bring in McG, then it's a sacrifice well made.

It'd be awfully nice to know the terms of the loan - whether it gives rise to a follow-on term if we wished, etc

his contract ends 6 months after xmass approx, he wont be going for 1m anywhere imo

How does the wage process work then when a club signs a player on loan then?

I know for situations like when Bellamy joined Cardiff it was reported Man City were paying his wages but my understanding was that's fairly rare and the club who have taken a player on loan would be responsible for the wages.

That being said, are we not already paying his wages or is it a split 50/50 or something like that?

Main reason that makes me think this is the fact that when we loan players out it has been to cut down the wage bill to bring others in.

So...If we are already paying his wages then surely it's in the budget. Can someone let me know if I'm on or off the mark with this?

No I agree but that is what he cost and Forest want to recoup some of the money. He will still be worth something - half a mill I guess.

No-one knows but I would guess we are paying a percentage of his wage which is withing our budget.

Just looking at the championship table, and I think the biggest threat would be someone like Birmingham coming in for him; as they're struggling for goals this term, could pay afee and wouldn't struggle with his wages.

McGoldrick to St Andrews and Marlon back?!? Marlon and McDonald as a partnership?!?

How important are goals?

They can only sell him if he agrees to be sold. With the way they have left him out of the squad and now loaned him out will he feels as though he owes them anything? Would he want to stay with us? He can't fully chose what happens between Jan and the end of the season, but the rest of the time he can. Robins seems to get what he wants, and SISU getting a 1m player for nothing other than wages they might go for it. That is as long as we stay within the 65% of income.

Astute, your forgetting the agents role/influence. If he continues this scoring form and goes back in jan with 13-14 goals in 25ish games there will be championship clubs interested. If a championship club comes knocking offering a 2-3 year deal there is no way he will turn it down. If Forest can get £300k+ for a player they don't want they'll snap someone's hand off.

He could be the difference to us making the play offs IMO.
Funny thing is that if he was our player who was out of contract at the end of the season then he would be brought for a low price by another club, but we won't get him on the cheap, that's if we get him at all which I very much doubt.

Only problem with that though mate is we sold our best defender to pay that fee. ( wonder how many of us would rather we had kept Turner now )
If Sisu did buy McGoldrick for £400 - £500k then I would expect one of our better players to be sold.
Who ever they are.

As I said it depends on if he wants to stay with us. He seems happy to be with us. He knows he will play every game. Would he want to leave if his goals push us towards the top of the table? Not all players go where the most money is offered. For instance Keogh didn't. I enjoy my job. I wouldn't leave for more money.

We could only pay for him if it never took us over the 65% of income, althoigh we could pay it next season and use it as next seasons income.

To be fair i can see his loan being extended and then something sorted out in the summer. Coventry seem unlikey to buy him outright unless the fee is very small. i would love him to stay he is turning into my favorite player. I think he is all heart as well and love his approach to our games.

I seem to remember us loaning Sheffers to Luton where he hit a good streak of form. I remember the Luton fans were desperate to keep him at the time but he came back and started doing the business for us.
My point is its not about finding level it could be just everything falling into place. Who knows he could go back to Forest and get back in the first team. He is only young still chance to improve and make it in the game.

The reason he is so important to us is that he's the only striker we have at the club who can regularly create chances for himself as well as put most of them away. McDonald doesn't have that attribute and even if he did his finishing can leave a lot to be desired. SISU have to try all they can to either extend his loan til the end of the season or buy him on a permanent deal!

Oh and hi btw, signed up a year ago but never got round to actually posting until now!

Forest will be lucky to get over 250k for him, out of contract, and not proven at Championship level, I rate him but, not many championship teams, if any, will come in for him for a fee.

McDonald wasn't proven at League One level let alone the Championship and someone came in with a fee.

Nor had Le Fondre, he did well... McG is different to them because he's been at 2 championship scrubs and didn't do great.

I struggle to figure out how he did so poorly in the Championship with Forest, when you watch him play for us he looks a completely different class to everyone else on the pitch!

It hasn't worked out for him at Forest but he was just a kid at Southampton - he must have done something right there for forest to pay £1m for him. If he's got 10-12 goals by the end of his loan spell there will be lower-mid championship clubs interested.

Someone said he could sign a pre-contract with us before his contract with Forest expires in the summer?

That is an ideal solution for us but can't see you can do that while still under contract to Forest?
Still think there would be some fee involved...

That's what worries me because there will be championship clubs watching him and willing to grab for a fee in January one would have thought? It may simply be a matter of what fee will tempt Forest considering the player may well decide to run his contract down and Forest get nothing.

A lot will depend on his continued goal scoring form and if I were MR I would be preparing Cody asap and certainly not be relying on converting a loan into a deal for us.

That was my thought... But they could wait and get him on a free, I doubt a club will pay a fee for him.

Which I still have difficulty understanding, he was out with a broken leg for a long time when he was at Preston and didn't quite break back into the first team when he recovered but then AT decided to use what limited funds we had to bring him here. Ah well, at least he scored that screamer against Bury!

To ask such a question I have to ask have u saw this lad play ? Where have you been ?? He's been a
Cut above since he arrived 7 goals so far and is consistently superb we lose him and he's not replaced were in trouble 20 goal a season man at this level all day.

He broke into the team before they got relegated to L1, regarded as 1 for the future, doesn't look that bad tbf, and where else could you spend 120k?

My mistake in that case, didn't realise he had broken into the first team. I have no idea who else I'd want for that sort of money tbh, would normally say I want a player with a bit of experience but for that price we'd only be able to buy experienced players of the same calibre as Kilbane :facepalm:

I think the reason we have him on loan is because we couldnt afford to buy him. Things were obviously in the pipeline when AT was here (imo, judging by the fact he was signed so soon after he left, and Shaw wouldnt havent been asked 'is there anyone you want to bring in').

Hes only 24 so i think he would be worth going out of budget for, but within financial fair play etc, so if that meant offloading existing players that arent necessarily first choice then so be it. Didnt someone post on here recently saying we had 36 registered players? So we've got 35 to choose from (presuming McGoldrick was one of the registered ones)

He's been one of the worst performers this season. There were better players available on a free (e.g Gary Roberts) but we were under the embargo

Hes doing alright........as long as the balls on the penalty spot. Ironically this is where he got most of his goals from for us (i think)
