I honestly believe Whelan should have played for England.
I remember him doing a couple of shifts wide left for us and he was superb at a time when it was a problem position for the national team.
Surprised Ireland never made a move for him but not sure what the rules were then as he'd played for England at under 21s I think.
Really should have had a far better career than he did. One of my favourite City players.

He did say that he should have opted to play for the Republic and that is a regret of his. Was also in the verge of an England cap and knew that the scouts were watching him during that period.
When they hand caps out like confetti now there is no doubt he should of had one.
