Until I attended an evening with. Last year a local semi-pro team advertised tickets for said event bought 2 tickets for :thinking about: me and Norwich supporting mate. Spent the next two months biggin the guy up to anyone who would listen. On the night were suited & booted and with my hat & bottles of 1987 FA cup wine and ale
were off to posh hotel for a good night. I was quickly introduced to him and told him how much I had enjoyed watching him & how sorry I was when Big Ron let him go. We settled down for dinner and drinks and the night was going well. Then he starts to address the room I can honestly say it was clear he had no
affection for our club.
On the rare occasion he mentioned us it was in a derogatory fashion and it really was starting to piss me off (though my mate thought it hilarious)
He also came across as someone who loved himself a bit too much and was quite conceited.
Despite having plyed his trade with Wigan .Stockport.Oldham.Pompey. Newcastle. Plymouth. Watford and
PAOK Thessaloniki it was obvious that we were his minnow.
Well they do say you should never meet your heroes.

Think your 1st mistake was saying Ron Atkinson let him go...I believe it was Phil Neal that showed him the door as met Quinny in the reception at the De Vere when he was checking out after leaving us and when I told him how gutted I was he was going told me that Phil Neal was a complete cnut for doing it!

Maybe you're right! Just remember him with his luggage in reception saying he absolutely hated Neal and he was the reason he was leaving the club...in fairness he looked really upset by it all so must have had some feeling for the club.

Just checked and you're right...had a massive bust up with Phil Neal following his dismissal at Blackburn and never played for us again. It was Big Ron who actually sold him though after his loan spells at a couple of clubs. Good memory! Do think he had an affection for the club at the time though as he was close to tears the day I met him!

I'm with Matesx on this.

Sumo never failed to try and keep our sorry exiled plight in the spotlight on his show.

I've never heard him say anything derogatory about us as a club, in fact his view is quite the opposite.

He loved playing for us and he loved the fans.

Quinny drinks in my local and i think he's a top man. Always a good laugh and he was great with my boys when i took them down to meet him, did them sone signed posters and told them about his time here. Its Big Ron he hates, said he sent him outta cov with just his footie boots. On a side note he also told me about the time he was stopped from putting craig bellamy through a wall up at Newcastle coz he was being a twat.

I've been lucky to meet Greavsie,Hudson,Glazier,Machin,and Curtis.And all of them were great and were just humble blokes who just loved playing football for a living. My mate took the biscuit though many years ago when he was at Heathrow and lo and behold it was rumoured David Bowie was about to come through the airport,and he was a huge Bowie fan. And Bowie did come through quickly and didn't want any fuss etc,and was gone in a minute. Because his hero didn't stop and sign autographs my pal went off him.He said you can go off people !

Back in the day I met Houchen who was seemingly a really pleasant level - headed sort.

And Speedie...a 3mins conversation & he was offering to buy drinks & was all smiles & good humour. It was quite a surprise as always struck me as a nasty piece of work on the pitch

Well going on what I heard that night I would have to disagree. One of his anecdotes that stuck in my craw that night was.
When Keenan called him into the office to inform him they'd received an enquiry about him & were seriously considering it.

Anyone who 'ates 'Big' Ron is all right in my book! I hated the fat twat ever since he had a go at me for doing my job. He didn't like the fact that I stood up to him and Maurice Setters at Ryton once. (It's a long story!)

He did an evening a my mates boozer in Wolverhampton. Found him a top bloke. Loves City fans, and kept saying Coventry were a 'proper football club' read his book and you'll find that out.

Not having any of it , I used to talk to Mick a lot, he was and is a top bloke down to earth and a pro footballer. He has no bones over Coventry they paid his wages and when they did not require hisservices he moved on. He still boasts of his opening day extravaganza against the gunners. I still see him occasionally through NH racing as my uncle is a well known trainer like I say decent fella.

Done the book but going on what I heard him say.
My mate did say he could have been winding me up being the only cov fan there. In the sense had I been Pompey he would of been giving them loads. But it just didn't come across for me

Lots of times when previous players are written about they don't mention Coventry in their previous clubs - I notice no mention of us in Kenny Sampsons woes this week - maybe we had something to do with it !

I met Quinny at a Q/A night at the Cedars. he spoke well and speaks well about us on Talk Sport . I think he has fond memories of all the clubs he's played for. I'm sure whilst he's on the after dinner circuit , he'll have good and bad things to say re all his clubs. he treated Football for what it is , you're a commodity and then you move on to your next club. I wouldn't take it personally .

Thing is, after almost every goal he scored in the 92/93 season he'd either acknowledge the fans or he'd be running to them to celebrate. He clearly appreciated the fan's affection for him, but I guess he had his own real-life issues that contributed to his getting rather overweight and dropping off the radar.
