I watched the 87 cup final on DVD last night ... (1 Viewer)

It was years since I last saw the final as I only had it on video and not had a video player in the house for about 15 years! The wife got me a copy on DVD for Christmas and I thoroughly enjoyed it like it was the first time I had watched.

In fact I barely remember it - and what a great game it was. I had forgotten all kinds of things like just how good Benno was that day, Oggy's disasterous attempt at dribbling, Maggie Thatcher in the crowd, standing on the terraces, fences still up (no jumpers for goalposts though).

Passing back to the keeper so many times seemed simply alien despite having been brought up with it and some of the tackles were 'proper' (although the commentators saying what a good spirit it was played in by comparison to normal games). In fact when tackles did fly in, both players dust themselves down, a pat on the back and they get on with it - no two team brawls trying to get each other sent off with the over the top reactions.

Not only were we a good side on the best day in our history, but football in general was better. I know this makes me sound like my dad, but it was. Perhaps not as tactical, skilful or athletic, but 1000% more exciting.

In fact the only disappointment I had was how poor Cyrille was on the day. He was a hero of mine growing up and I recall had a great season that year, but on the day poor and I didn't remember that at all.

He did but barely touched it and nothing came off for him. I know Houch (who was generally poor apart from the cup) was immense that day, but the Cyrille role of holding it up and the flick ons all seemed to be through Houch.

Yep, different game back then, spirit wise. Agree with Sam though about Cyrille, don't forget he provided the flick on for Houchen in the lead up to his goal.

Sadly like you , I have been watching older clips of games on utube (Promise it was those sites), yes the biggest difference from today to mid-late 80's was tackling and how people reached to it (or not in the 80's). You can see tackles flying in that would be a red card today, but the players just got up and carried on with the game. Can you imagine some of the pansies that play today playing in the 80's, would spend the whole match in tears!!!

But the best bit was you didn't need a young woman, 15 first aiders and a risk assessments every time somebody went down, just the trusted bucket and sponge, it seemed to cure every injury know to man, why the hell the NHS didn't catch on I don't know!!!

I have the match DVD that my wife got me when it first came out still sealed in the case. I am waiting until my little boy is old enough to appreciate it before I take it out and show him. So no matter what happens between now and then he will see what football is all about and will help get him hooked like his dad.

It will be good to have someone to share the journey with......and even better when he is old enough to have a drink and not fall asleep during the game.
