Overpaid footballers,foreign owners,divers,crap refs,poor players,ticket prices,and dodgy agents.
The list could go on to be honest and you can see why people are leaving the beautiful game as it just doesn't seem to be as exciting as it used to be.I watched the Ipswich v Southampton tie on telly last night and it was tedious and also watching Match of the Day last weekend even though it was only highlights many of the games shown were as interesting as watching paint dry. Great players are few and far between and the physical side of the game has gone as the slightest nudge between players will result in a yellow card.I've loved football for over fifty years and can't see it never being a part of my life, but what's happening to the sport I've been so passionate about it just isn't that exciting anymore or is that just me being a disgruntled Coventry City fan ?

the kids still love it.....the grounds at the top level are still pretty full.....its just that the game has changed & you're old skool.

Same issue, different subject: I spent my youth off my tits raving & going to festivals like Glastonbury where you could jump over the fence for nowt and the events were sponsored by CND, Greenpeace, Oxfam etc.....

These days its about £280 + photo ID & a waiting list to get in to watch has-beens & mainstream acts sponsored by Vodafone, BP, Costa etc.

I hate it because I'm old skool.....but over 300,000 people still tried getting tickets for this years event which sold out in mins without even knowing the line-up.

So in answer to your question, its not crap, just different.

Differently crap and full of professional cheats !

Ha ha....I know what you mean, but when I look at my brother kids (mine are a little too young to be fanatical just yet) and how they go mental for anything football related, you can't help thinking "that's just like I was when I was a kid"......so I always refrain from being the grumpy old bastard who starts the "its was better in my day" rant.....even if I believe it myself...because it clearly was:p

like you I've been going to concerts for years and used to get into Monsters of Rock at Donnington by scaling the fence and getting wrecked on cheap booze etc. But as for my football thread I was inspired to write it as my son who used to be as football mad as me has lost interest and he's only thirty ! But you are right I am one of those boring old farts constantly going on about "the good old days" just like my dad did when I was a lad.

I don't understand why things like diving and having a go at the ref aren't clamped down on. Start at the top, ever PL game is televised so why don't the FA review every game and if there's a dive it's a post game red card, fine and ban. It will be chaos the first few weeks but they'll soon stop. Same with trying to get players sent off etc, make it so only the captain can approach the ref, anyone else does it straight red.

They could stop these things if they wanted to but they seem scared to clamp down.

Yep, it's crap compared to how it used to be.

Diving, shirt pulling, cheating, time wasting, too much athleticism and not enough skill and not enough entertainment.

I would be done I think it City disappeared. Just follow England games through patriotism and would stick with American Football, which for me is 100 times more exciting than football anyway.

Agree with all of this Otis except the American Football !

I agree too, eventually football will about as physical as netball the way it is going and players won't be able to tackle and have to just try and intercept passes. Not keen on American football either, full of adverts!

Ha ha i used to do the same, there was always a bloke with a ladder then you had the 50 yard dash to get to the wire fence through the stream of guards on quadbikes. It was like escaping prison!!

Does everyone agree that, that feigning of an injury by the Fleetwood centre back was a disgrace?

He was rolling around on the floor holding his face for about 6 seconds like he been poleaxed by a grizzly bear and then when he realised he wasn't getting anything he leaped to his feet and sprinted like crazy back into the penalty box.

I hate stuff like that and I wish refs would book them.

Agree he should have been told yo get of the pitch and then been booked, the over celebrating of goals annoys me just as much when they all go for a hug in the far corner the referee should blow the whistle and you can kick off

Refs should announce the kick off is taking place, whether the scoring team are lined up or not,. Go ahead without them if necessary.

Alternatively, like in cricket, where a player has 2 minutes to get to the wicket after a player is out, football should adopt the same concept.

Kick off needs to be within 30 seconds of the ball going in the net unless the ref blows for an injury or incident.

The one that gets me is the last player always walks through the centre circle to the furthest point away. But that ref yesterday was weak, they also need to change the time the goalkeeper can take over goal kicks and instead of booking them for time wasting a free kick outside the box.

Yep. Give them 6 or 10 seconds to take the kick once they have it in their hands and are ready to take it.

10 seconds is a hell of a long time.

Isn't the rule 6 seconds?

That rule is the 6 seconds with the ball in their hand, in play. We're talking about goal kicks, so a dead ball scenario.

10 seconds from when they have their ball in the hands for a goal kick. So 10 seconds to place the ball do their run up and kick it. You have to remember they can change sides and move the ball about on the 6 yard line.

And generally they piss about to waste time. When we are away from home to waste time we should take a goal kick and the defender goes in the area and touch the ball so it has to be re- taken I wonder how many times you could do it before the weak refs in this league could do anything.

Then they just take the time picking it up or walking to get it :(

Then you need a strong ref and the multi ball system eith ball boys that are older and are watching the game (not like yesterday were one threw the ball in the wrong direction but no his fault we lost)

I know one thing. It's increasingly foreign crap rather than British crap. Foreign owners, foreign managers, foreign players. Some weekends it's hard to find any British player on the score-sheets. Imagine trying to find players for the English national team with so few to choose from. And good Scottish players, who used to litter the top division, are increasingly rare.
