Does anyone else feel like Lamps and Southgate play a very similar style? Very slow and progressive, riding our luck at times, not the sexiest of football but the results speak for themselves. I know Southgate relied a lot on statistics, making decisions that to the fans looked bizarre but gave the highest % of a win. Feels like Lamps has us questioning but after 90 mins we’re all singing super Frank …A long way to go for the playoffs but could we just do it?
Yeah without EMC and Wright he's unable to play his preferred style.I think Lampard has had to be pragmatic.
Lost Wright before he was in the door.
Sheaf and EMC followed.
Came in just before the busiest period of the season so was limited with regard to time on the training pitch.
I think we'll see a massive change in approach at some point, perhaps start of next season.

I’d like him to play attractive football. He came into a squad that hit a low due to disjointed coaching over several months from the time Lawrence left, right through to the Derby game and beyond.Does anyone else feel like Lamps and Southgate play a very similar style? I’m hoping this is just a hiatus as I see a lot of potential in this team. Once the defence is sorted we will be challenging for automatic promotion.

This is the interesting thing for me. Can’t get EMC and Wright into the side without a shape change, but can we go back to 4ATB while we’re on this run?
He’ll have to change to be fair - we’ll need to be more dynamic in the PL.I think Lampard has had to be pragmatic.

I just saw it as something we were doing while we were missing EMC and Wright to play on the left. Southgate had no such issues and decided to commit multiple crimes against football anyway. There’s a slight similarity with this team and Southgate’s England, in that both sides have plenty of - if not too many - options in certain attacking positions, but are held back by CBs who aren’t up to scratch.
Going 3ATB and/or playing two defensive midfielders can mitigate that, but the real question is how do we switch to a back four and get all the forward talent on the pitch…

If your defenders aren't up to task having more of them on the pitch seems an odd way of mitigating that.
This is the same trap teams fall into with cramming their own boxes at corners. The logic behind it is really to give them smaller areas to cover. In practice, unless we play a flat back 5 it causes as many issues as it solves due to the wide CBs being terrified of defending the wide channels.
For me, yes, change back to 4 ASAP. Basically all the stats show us being better in a 4, I think recent results are more due to Dovin and increased confidence than our shape. This is the interesting thing for me. I thought Robins was renowned as being a bit aloof and abrasive with the players tbh. Tactically I thought he was pretty good too, even if it often took a while to land on the killer setup. His in-game management was generally very good as well.I personally thought Robins was more like Southgate.
A man who could rally a bunch of players together but ultimately poor with tactics and substitutions. Both successful but the time was up.
Ironically, I think Frank will manage England after Tuchel.

Just pondering on this, when Sheaf and Wright return (fully fit) gives us:
Dovin
MVE Thomas Kitching Bidwell
Sheaf Grimes Rudoni
Wright Simms EMC
and a second XI which would be vaguely respectable:
Collins
Burroughs Lati Binks Dasilva
Eccles Allen Torp
Sakamoto Bassette Paterson
Wilson, Tyler, Howley, Raphael, BTA
Fully appreciate, other people might question the personnel i.e Binks over Kitching or BTA rather than Bassette, and as for the reserve goalkeeper debate... but the basic principle applies that when we switch to 433 that generally options improve and we have a reasonable second XI, looking at both teams though it is clear we do need some reinforcements in defensive areas to improve the quality of the team/squad/Deck.
I was totally in the Robins camp and was gutted when he was sacked. When all was said and done I was really excited by Lampard’s appointment the one person I wanted. He will, if given time, take us to the next level I believe. Our main problem will be if a Premier league side come knocking and make an offer he can’t refuse in the meantime.
Comparisons to Southgate’s style of play are a bit premature. Once he adds a few more of his own signings to the “deck” then I think we will see a more attractive approach to our game.
If he stays for a while I think we could have a new legend in the making, here’s hoping
And the home visit just to keep the sign on em!100% - I wouldn’t have got rid of Robins and felt a bit ‘meh’ about anyone other than Moyes, Potter or Cooper and that was frankly, unrealistic. Lampard was by far and away the standout candidate and the other runners and riders have struggled since (barring Eustace, somewhat).
This comparison to Southgate’s England Southgate is just dumb. The game we didn’t deserve to win was Wednesday.
Even against QPR, we were the most likely team to win the game. The games, we were the better team in every game we won, home and away.
The fact that we’ve done it without 3 of our best players really shows how much better coached the side is. As you say, add a few players to the group we should be able to carry this momentum into next season if we don’t go up via the playoffs. I’m optimistic that we’ll finish 5th and fancy beating Sunderland over 2 legs to get the playoff final, again. 3rd time lucky?
There are not many I would swap for Southgate, look how many prem jobs have been available and he doesn’t get a sniff the only one he got close to was Utd because Ashworth likes him, Southgate’s next job will be managing some football no mark like Qatar or Saudi Arabia.I‘m not sure if the Southgate comparison is supposed to be a compliment or not. I certainly wouldn’t swap Lampard for Southgate.
What a stupid topic. In a short period of time he has turned things around and got us winning, got us within one point of the playoffs and you still aren't happy? I mean seriously??
