Can remember lustily cheering him on during his frequent dribbles up field, whilst also alarmingly concerned about the gaping hole he was leaving at back
We had a very competitive and effective squad in 97/98 and 99/00. The latter was a damp quib of a season, obviously, as our away record crippled that season.
Personally, I think the 97/98 team was better, as we finished 11th in the PL and knocked the Villa out of the QF’s of the FA Cup. We had Hedman, Breen, Nilsson, Boateng, McAllister, Soltvedt, Dublin, Huckerby, Whelan…
I think the squad we have, has a way to go yet, in terms of cohesively achieving the potential it has. At this point, yes, it has the potential to be the best squad we’ve had since the PL.

In my mind, all we need is a player like Hamer in this team and we become so much better at creating chances, and scoring goals (in theory). Likewise, something needs to be done about the defence.
You look at Eccles and Sheaf, they do not pass enough to players in the box. Both are quality players outside of that final third. Torp and/or Rudoni need to step up too.
We need to not be reliant on a singular player, so signing the next Hamer would hinder us if anything especially if we dont go up because as soon as they leave we’re right back where we started
