My concern was that flipping to a back 4 would bring about a loss of attacking impetus from the full backs. How wrong I was. Bidwell fantastic yesterday, MvE v good as well.

Why? Fullbacks in a back four have always been attacking options overlapping the midfield. Look at City fullbacks in the past, Mick Coop, Stuart Pearce, Bobby McDonald, Graham Oakley....
The thing with playing wing backs is you get extra men in midfield potentially, but in certain situations you can expose them more defensively.
Like any tactic or formation there are pros and cons. You still need players who can react to what is happening in front of them, even if it mean, abandoning the system. Bidwell does that well, reacts and plugs holes and space forcing play in another direction. In attack he provides options for the midfield and not afraid to cross when receiving the ball.
My problem with Da Silva is, defensively he is naive and weak. Then in attacking situations he, won't take responsibility and take risks, losing us valuable momentum. He may look more stylish on the ball than Bidwell, but so what?
