I don’t think Charles needs the civil list pay cheque somehow
The theoretical power argument is pretty pointless as the institution only survives due to impartiality
Compared to a lot of the options Charles is about as good as it gets. In many ways he’s been ahead of the curve. When I was a kid I remember him being ridiculed in the media for his opinions on climate change, turned out he was right all along.I don't understand what Charles has done that's so wrong, and what makes him a bad symbol anyway.
Notwithstanding, it's the people who choose to make it without power. the monarch, after all, has to give Royal Assent to all bills, and has to ask somebody to form the government. They also get consulted regularly by the Prime Minister. Theoretically, they can only give assent to bills they like, or advise on their changing, and they can ask anybody to form the government.
None of that is great.
As it happens the Queen, Charles, and William all recognise that flexing power means the end of their pay cheque. They're probably lucky that Harry was second son, however.

He did also awkwardly try to interfere in the Blair government, as the Guardian publishing his letters was showing until the Cameron government shut it down.
Oh and that unfortunate lasting friendship with Mr Savile
The same Mr Savile the Tories put in charge of hospitals, used to have spend Christmas’ at Chequers, campaigned for his nighthood etc etc etc. could do this all day.The same Mr Saville a certain Director of public prosecutions decided not to prosecute

I was interested to see/hear Johnson getting booed quite as much as he did.
In my mind at least, the crowds at a Royal occasion would be made up of predominantly dyed in the wool Tories.
The same Mr Saville a certain Director of public prosecutions decided not to prosecute
Sometimes? You really are a fucking idiot sometimes.
Not actually true is that. The royal fondness of Savile, especially from Charles, is a bit unfortunate
Keir Starmer led the CPS when it did not charge Jimmy Savile, but he wasn’t the reviewing lawyer - Full Fact
Sometimes?
You really are a fucking idiot sometimes.
Well maybe I am but you are all the time
What’s it like?
why is it unfortunate? Is this picture unfortunate?
On Jimmy Savile, Tony Blair, and turning a blind eye to serious crimes
The terrible thing about Jimmy Savile’s serious crimes involving young girls is how many people in senior and influential positions knew about his behaviour and chose to do nothing about it, …www.leftfutures.org
So you believe voters in the north who voted labour normally are republicans
The royals saw him as a popular figure who could help increase their own popularity with the public. Charles more than the rest though as that pile of correspondence confirms
So did politicians old Tone loved to be seen with him he was often at chequers with him
Scots pop guru Alan McGee on being introduced to Jimmy Savile by Tony Blair
The evening has been re-enacted for a film on McGee’s life which premieres at Glasgow Film Festival tomorrow.www.dailyrecord.co.uk
My grandad's family, miners in Co. Durham, were mostly republicans. Skinner was elected for nearly 50 years despite being a vocal anti monarchist too. Ironically only voted out at the Brexit election despite actually supporting Brexit himself.
Most of the country support the monarchy, and the % is similar across England. Ignoring that support for the monarchy is markedly lower in Scotland which was also a Labour hotbed for decades
Which is fine, but old Tone isn't in contention for the throne
So what?
From what I see it’s just a load of white privelege middle class people who think it’s edgy and cool to say a few anti royal things on a football forum
So are you saying Charles new about Saville? Any evidence?
Yeah, probably a simplification on my part.Doubt it. The red wall labour voters will be by and large royalists
Well not quite I've been opposed to them from an early age and have physically gone to protests. Skinner wasn't middle class last time I checked
About the crimes, who knows. But he certainly knew the man well and sought his advice for many years.
“about the crimes who knows”
Dear me
So are you saying Charles new about Saville? Any evidence?
Well if he had that much time near the man and didn't suspect a thing he's even more dense than I thought
Mark Drakeford made gave a very diplomatic/respectful interview about it all…what else is he going to do I guess. As a counter point I will add, what a hypocrite this woman is. We want to break the union but keep its head of state? Though at a Republic event an SNP politician in attendance did let the veil slip by saying this stance is just to get more unionists on side with the plan to ditch the Queen when independent.
Nicola Sturgeon speaks of her deep respect for the Queen - BBC News
Sorry, but a lot of people didn’t know/chose not to know. Louis Theroux had heard the rumours…he addressed them in that documentary…and yet I think remained ‘friends’ with him after it. I think he even went and stayed with Savile.Well if he had that much time near the man and didn't suspect a thing he's even more dense than I thought
But but but but but but but labourThe same Mr Saville a certain Director of public prosecutions decided not to prosecute
Well you're saying Starmer decided not to prosecute Savile. Any evidence?
