I really don't get the negativity across all sections of the forum.

Mowbrays team was good enough for a top 3 finish a few years ago until January business messed things up. I'd argue this squad has the potential to be better and with a better manager.

I'm not saying we'll definitely get anything, but I don't see any reason to pull out all this "12th place would be good" nonsense. We are still a bigger club in this division regardless of our relegation. We'll still have a decent budget and some of the biggest crowds. We've got one of the best managers. Arguably some of the best young players in the division in the likes of Sterling, Bayliss, Jones, even Willis. We poached two of the best players from the third placed team last season. The young squad is only going to improve from last season and now they know what it takes to get promoted.

Up to a point you’re right but as the Niis pointed out in this week’s pod that midfield contained:-
Fleck/Vincelot/Maddison and Lamieras or Cole

Upfront were Armstrong and Murphy

I feel much closer to this team and manager but I’d suggest Mowbray’s failings are more stark when you consider the personnel he had.

we should have pissed that league. with that the start we had & the squad we had... that seemed to be general opinion at the time too.

Were they though? Being successful in promotion when nearly half of your Starting XI is made up of loans would be a massive feat for any manager. Not to mention the actual age of those loans and many of the squad members who played alongside them. It's renowned that young players tire, lose form and become inconsistent far quicker than players with experience behind them. Looking back our demise was textbook IMO, without knowing it Mowbray set himself up for failure from the get-go.

Only Armstrong and Murphy were proper loans from that list. Cole came as a loan and was made permanent, Maddison was loaned back after his transfer to Norwich.

In January Mowbray abandoned this policy in favour of signing Darius Henderson, Stephen Hunt and Peter Ramage. Look no further for an explanation for our inability to go up.

What's your definition of a 'proper loan'? You're either a permanent signing or a loan signing. Maddison wasn't the same player after his move to Norwich, the signing of Cole was yet another of Mowbray's genius plan of bringing in players that were long past it, and Ryan Kent was all show, no substance with his silky skills and appalling final product. Yes, it was only the signing of Armstrong and Murphy that brought us any success - but the jury is still out there on how good Murphy was for us and Armstrong went off the boil for the latter half of the season. There was no permanent structure to the club hence why Mowbray resigned, because he knew he had tried to fix a bullet wound with a plaster.

Can you imagine if we'd been promoted that season, we would've embarrassed ourselves in the Championship.

The age and inconsistency that came with that absolutely affected our performance, however that side had several players far too good for the division and should've gone up, or at the very least comfortably got a play-off spot. We needed more in January admittedly, and it was that business that killed us, all those signings were passengers when they played.

Individually they were fantastic players. It still astonishes me how Armstrong hasn't pushed on further in his career as I thought he was far more established than Maddison was at the time and set for the top. But I've always been adamant that you need a healthy age mix in a team and it's something we clearly lacked during that season. For instance, I believe at one point our front line had an average age of about 19 years old with Armstrong up front, Murphy and Kent on the flanks and Maddison in the middle. So, it's understandable why Mowbray brought in Cole but he was far too gone to have the desired effect TM wanted. It was a classic case of great on paper, but poor as a unit. Which showed through during the second half of the season as I previously stated.

January was make or break for us. If we had brought in the right signings we would've smashed the league but the lack of depth in our squad was exposed and it would've taken some shrew business by TM to stop the rot. I mean he couldn't exactly bring in more loans could he, we were already maxed out!

Cole played in the poor version of the side and was gash. Armstrong has done nothing since. Murphy and Maddison maybe, but are they really that much better than Bayliss and Sterling at that point? Wheres Vincelot now?

I think you (and nii) are romanticising a bit. This squad is more together and more experienced with better balance and depth.

Agree w much of this and don’t understand the point you’re trying to claim.
Murphy was excellent for us. Some fans showed themselves up with their lack of appreciation. Armstrong signed today for Blackburn for £3m. I never mentioned Kent as he didn’t really establish himself to my mind.

Finally Mowbray resigned because he failed to win any of the first 10 (ten) games of the season. We were bottom of the league. Mark Venus and even Russell Slade were improvements.

If you think it’s lucky we didn’t embarrass ourselves in the championship last season, how did you feel about the embarrassment we made of League One?

I'm not saying we'll definitely get anything, but I don't see any reason to pull out all this "12th place would be good" nonsense. We are still a bigger club in this division regardless of our relegation. We'll still have a decent budget and some of the biggest crowds. We've got one of the best managers. Arguably some of the best young players in the division in the likes of Sterling, Bayliss, Jones, even Willis. We poached two of the best players from the third placed team last season. The young squad is only going to improve from last season and now they know what it takes to get promoted.

I agree, except 12th place wouldn't be a disaster either and can still be seen as keeping the momentum going. Cheer up about a possible mid table finish.

In response to your McNulty 'debate', we are not actually privy as to the 100% goings on behind the scenes so who knows in what circumstances McNulty was allowed to leave, there may have been a ready made replacement for him and the deal fell through again who really knows!!
I am sure everyone here would have liked us to have brought in a replacement a month ago but again who knows what is actually going on in regards to finding and signing the player that Mark Robins wants, the Chaplin saga dragged on and on so that alone is 1 reason we never had a replacement sooner, I would rather Mark Robins takes his time and brings in the correct player for our team rather than panic buy someone just for the sake of it

Mowbray's biggest mistake that season was not dropping Murphy.

For every good game he had, there was 3 or 4 abysmal ones. People get blinded by his good bits and forget he was a burden on the pitch so often in that season.

Yep agreed. I like the squad, am not worried and my gut still says we'll do well.
And let's face it... if we'd scored a second yesterday and gone on to win, the mood on here would be very different and some would be talking about finishing top.
