Kitching vs Binks (3 Viewers)

It might just be a coincidence but our results from one player are play off level (albeit some of the games counted are cup games) whereas the other they're 17th place nailed on. Why is our record with Binks in the side so poor?

I think Kitching is more aggressive as a defender winning more first and second balls, he is also a bit better at covering the left hand channel. Bidwell gets a lot of stick, but Binks seems to leave big gaps in that area. He's also far better at attacking aerial balls in both boxes. Kitching probably also has a better understanding with Thomas having played with him for so long.

A part of me thinks that Binks is in the team for his range of passing because we’re missing that in midfield. His left to right diagonals are really good.

Defensively, I do think he’s soft compared to Kitching and the amount of goals we concede with him in the team atm is concerning. Against Watford we looked assured when Kitching and Thomas played and they’ve kept the only CS we had this season.

I think Kitching has had a pretty rough time of it at the club. Should be given a run in the team.

I’ve been making this point for weeks and was laughed at. It’s no secret that I don’t rate Binks, and think that the £2 million or however much we paid would have been better spent on someone else. However, I wonder if he might be better in a back 3 with Kitching and Thomas. Watford we played the three with Lati instead, I wasn’t there but by all accounts we looked more solid (against a team that had been scoring well).

I’ve always been of the opinion that a defender’s primary objective be to defend!

I fear that Robins though might put Kitching and Thomas in against Leeds United, which we are expecting to lose. We concede a couple, and Kitching will be the fall guy.

TBF it is probably heavily scewed by coincidence but in my mind (and Robins' last season) Thomas and Kitching are our first choice centre back pairing and the fact that they aren't this season is one of the most perplexing elements of our slow start.

I think while his diagonals are good, Kitchings straight passing through the lines is better

I don't mind Binks but I think as a 2, Thomas and Kitching is our best pairing by far and I have no idea why we're not playing it that way.

I like that about Kitching too, after our dip in form in March/April, Binks probably deserved a run in the side.

The average goals conceded with him and/or Lati playing CB should worry anyone. With the team lacking in leaders on the field, you’d think ex-Barnsley captain Kitching would be more important now.

I’m not sure about that, he loses quite a lot of aerial duals. One lead to a chance for Swansea in the 2nd half, caused a goal against Oxford (one of many errors in that sequence).

We also don’t win the ball high enough up the pitch and that’s on the midfield.

I agree with the passing comment above, Binks suits our style of play more I guess. But Kitching and Thomas command a presence at the back which we don't get with other pairs. Hence why Kitching was captain at Barnsley, he could organise a defence/team. I think Kitching is a wasted asset at this club.

Kitching has been dropped because he pissed MR off.

Eventually he'll get back in and we'll look a lot more solid. Kitching and Thomas are by far our best combination.

No we didn't. Lati played RB and MVE right mid.

It was a fluid formation, MVE and Lati were shifting around. Numerous times our shape had 3 CBs and a flat 5 when defending resembling a 3-4-2-1. There were times where MVE was higher up the pitch than a typical RWB and it resembled a 4-2-3-1. It can be both simultaneously.

Formations are rarely fixed nowadays and plenty of teams will defend and attack in different shapes.

Carsley’s England U21 team was a good example of this, it was nominally a 4-4-2 but the way they attacked was atypical. Like Arsenal yesterday too.

When everyone is fit the first 4 names on the team sheet should be Sheaf, Simms Wright and Kitching. No idea why he’s been left out. The only argument should be who plays alongside.

Kitching’s form at the end of last season was so bad that we needed an alternative and he needed to know he had competition. The shirt was Binks’ to lose but I’m sure Kitch will come back in soon. His aggression, pace and positioning are all superior. I haven’t seen him do the big switch balls out to the right wing but his passing on the deck is underrated and at his best, shows more cunning and urgency than Binks.

Kitchings passing between the lines is quick and incisive and allows Eccles , Sheaf and Torp to play higher up the pitch .
And he's our best centre back of the four we have

I think our defence is so shaky we need to move to five at the back with three in the centre.......I'd then play all three as they all have strenghts and weaknesses - Kitching, Thomas & Binks for me as three in the centre = MVE one wing back and probably JDS as the other. Hopefully Sheaf and Eccles holding......Simms/Wright and one other probably Rudoni or Saka off of those front two.

I sometimes wonder if Binks would be better as a holding/defensive midfielder in front of the back line.

It’s just a thought and we will never know unless MR tries him in that role.

Agree with this. Binks long diagonals are quality but he’s too slow to play/move the ball a lot of the time. He started the season pretty well on a personal level but we’ve been poor defensively. Kitching is more of an organiser and leader so needs a run next to Thomas to see if we can turn things around

It’s strange that we’ve been crying out for leadership on the pitch but Robins has left a former captain on the bench, guessing more to it

Have you got a similar charr for Wilson since he came to the club as I know from your posts you don't rate him. Can't be selective on results for one but performances gor another.

The truth with Kitching imo is trust from the manager after 3 red cards in quick succession albeit one of them not his fault.

I think it’s now or never for Kitching to be the leader we thought he was.

I think the answer is both, think Kitching could control the centre while Binks and Thomas in a back three can move up and try the diagonal ball if it’s on.

IMO it’s time to move to a 5-3-2 and 5-2-3 respectively depending on the opposition and fitness levels for Sheaf.
