Just listening to talksport yesterday and they were talking about Southampton's revival as a young, English team and got me thinking about us. Bascially relegation to league one gave players like Bale et al the opportunity to get into the first team which they wouldn't have had the chance even if they were a championship side which is very similar to us where we have had to give chances to Thomas, Wilson, Christie etc etc to develop as a team and to become decent players.

I am not saying we have these same quality but clearly we are operating in a similar vain as them which is really encouraging. I was sick of the journeymen we had in the championship for so many years and despite the predicament we are currently in i.e. 6fields etc we can be positive that we have a decent side.

Just a thought.....

Gareth Bale has never played in League 1. He left them at the end of the 2006/7 season, when they reached the Championship play-offs. They were relegated to League 1 at the end of the 2008/09 season. Gareth Bale had in any case been in their first team pretty much as soon as he could talk...as were other young players Lallana and Schneiderlin before relegation.

Having the Markus Liebherr money when in L1 to go out and sign the likes of Lambert is also just a little bit different to our circumstances.

Yeah, I remember that game. Unfortunately for them he was their only decent player that night!

I'm pretty sure Southamptons wage bill was around £14m in their league one promotion season, but can't find the article that it came from. I did however find the previous years where wages had risen to £11.4m to £12.3m (2010) having reduced the wage bill from £25.6m in 2005.

There is a pattern, build stadium while in Premiership, get relegated one or 2 divisions, clear the decks, return to promised land..

Going back 20 years, we've seen it happen to Southampton, Derby, Norwich, Stoke & probably others I can't be bothered to look up..

Sometimes the process is a tad protracted..

Yep, but I don't think we should be getting ahead of ourselves. Those teams were heavily financed and apart from Stoke big followings. Without a takeover and access to all additional match day and other revue we won't replicate their success.

For example Southampton got promoted from the championship with a £29m wage bill.
