That’s a blow. At least we’re pretty much over the line.

The headline says ‘drops hint about new contract’ but I can’t see one.

One of the last paragraphs of that reads to me as if he won’t be offered a new deal

“It’s a major blow but bearing in mind the contribution he’s made over the whole season and last four years, it’s a blow to lose him at any point but his contribution is there for everyone to see and won’t be forgotten. He’s been outstanding.”

He’s done well for the club and has played a big part in getting where we are

Doubt we will renew though - he’s older injury prone and if we did sign James and Sheaf I suspect we will look elsewhere

That’s a pisser. We need our season pros more than ever, by all accounts it was the senior players who led the heart to heart after the Stoke game. For that attribute alone we need to be offering Kelly a new contract. Not that that is his only attribute.

If you gave out contracts for leadership, every team would have one guy that they are paying money to at 50 years old just because they can fire up the boys.

Kelly has been a great pillar of the club's rise. But if Robins and the staff don't think he will produce the next year or two at the level needed, then time to let go and replace. While you may lose his leadership, there will be someone who has the chance to step up and become that leader for the club.

Wouldn't be surprised if we offered him a new deal but with the expectation being he'd be a squad player rather than first choice.

He may well choose to leave for guaranteed football in that scenario. I'd love him to stay personally. Great attitude and never lets us down.

Why is there a heart to heart after an away win at Stoke? 😂

Can't believe some are alright with Kelly not being offered a new deal. He is 31, not 35/36. Considering his position, he's good for another 2 years minimum. Yes he has had injury issues, but comes back quickly and always influences the games he plays in. No guarantee of James or Sheaf signing, and no-one has seen enough of Eccles to know if he is good enough for a starting position. Kelly would be the first player I'd offer a deal too.

In the conversation for robins best ever signing but I think this would be a good time for us to part ways. Let him go and get a good 2/3 year deal in league 1.

We should to be fair offer Kelly a contract for life. It now emerges he was the key figure who gave a bollocking to the lads when they won the play off final

The best ability is availability.

If the staff doesn't trust him to stay healthy, then I can't fault them for wanting to move in a different direction.

Should stick to the old arsenal method of only giving 1 year deals to players in their 30’s, (or 2 years at half the pay)!

TBF he collided with the goalpost. I’m not sure age was a contributing factor in this injury. Also his game is based on composure not running around as the fastest man on the pitch being all Roy of the Rovers. He’s the type of player that gets better with age, a bit like Gary McAllister.

Year on year Kelly's credentials have been questioned... And he's answered those questions with interest. I can probably count the amount of poor games he's had for the club on one hand... and still have spare fingers. I honestly think he must go down as the best signing the club have made in probably a decade.

First name on the team sheet and hands down our most important player this season.

To suggest he shouldn't get a contract is nuts.

I'm all for improving the squad in all areas and not just keeping players because we like them, but we would most likely be going down this season if it wasn't for Kelly and there is nothing to suggest he cant perform as well next season.

This season stats:

Kelly played - 23 games - points 34 - PPG 1.45 (better than QPR in 8th)
Not played - 20 games - points 17 - PPG 0.85 (worst than Wycombe)

By the end of the season he will most likely have played in exactly half the games, if he can do the same next season, he's worth a contract.

Negotiations are almost certainly already taking place
The sticking point is likely to be the length of the contract as Kelly will probably want 3 years at this point in his career
I will be extremely surprised if a deal isn't done though

Dont disagree, i would love to have both again next season though, i'm also not sure whether we can afford James anyway, aren't his wages something ridiculous (all be it he probably knows he'll never earn that again).

i cant imagine Kelly will demand too higher wages but agree length could also be an issue, i cant see him still being as influentual in 3 seasons time so we will see!

I would give him another year and club to have option of another year. It is not just his ability but is an influential figure at the club.
