Just read James is seriously thinking of switching to play for Ireland. Would this have any affect on whether we would get monies for international appearances?

No way. Entirely possible he'll be in the next England squad and stay there

He’s basically said if he’s not in the England Euro squad for the next qualifier he’s likely to move. I don’t think threatening the England manager is the best approach

I think it's his way, possibly his agent, to get him involved with the England set up as recently he has been overlooked. If he is not an international his value would decrease. But, it is a real possiblitiy according to the people close to him.

He'd be stupid to do it unless he genuinely considers himself Irish rather than English, in which case just make the decision now.

I can't see James wanting to be at Leicester forever and I could actually see him go to somewhere like Spain or Italy so being an international would be important for that development. Being an international seems more important than playing for ones own country nowadays, like Archer with the cricket.

I have Irish parents and have always supported Ireland and if I was a footballer I’d have chosen to play for them as well.

As a fan of the RoI, I’d have mixed feelings about this; playing for an international team should be because you genuinely feel as though it’s part of who you are.

Hinting you’d play for one as part of a threat to force your way into another one is pretty low.

I agree with this. It should be about heart not head.

Really hope he does from a purely selfish point of view as in 2015 I tried to put a bet on that he would play for England and the bookies wouldn’t take it. It would somehow make me feel better if it doesn’t happen regardless of the fact I’ll get no money either way.

What's he actually said? Can't find any quotes from him. Only thing that comes up on google is an article from an Irish paper saying Mick McCarthy is keen on it.

Maddison will be an England player at some point this season.

If not then Southgate is clueless. Rose tinted glasses off he is one of the best creative English midfielders we've had in a long time.

However saying he will switch to play for Ireland is very arrogant.

I feel his pain in a way, with his stats last season compared to say Lingard who gets picked all the time was miles better

Don't worry it's just England fans being arrogant again because they beat Papua New Guinea 5-0 and will definitely win the next world cup.

Ireland presumably would like to retaliate for Damien Rice’s switch to England. Maddison was in the England squad this time last year but was not given a space on the sub’s bench and has not featured in a senior squad since. Sancho, Rice, and even Ward-Prowse have leapt ahead of him in Southgate’s view while Henderson, Dier and Lingaard are still features of the England midfield.

Whether Maddison upset someone or just failed to impress when he had a chance I don’t know but I can’t see him making the England breakthrough tbh and I suspect neither can he or his advisors

He should wait as Southgate won’t last forever as he won’t win anything, he should be in before Lingard but it still seems to be the club you are at.

I’d expect it’s something him and his advisors and agent have initiated to try and get a look in. Apparently tentative talks have taken place, so I think there’s something to it.

In that case no England manager is ever going to last for long.

The thing I found odd in the piece in the Irish paper was Rodgers saying there's no contact from Southgate. Suspect a lot of people assumed when he kept getting left out he was close to getting in but that comment implies he's further away from the squad than that.

Very few have and the reality now is they have as much chance of making a major competition as San Marino

Well, it’s the 3rd most popular sport in the country. You’re comment about having as much chance of qualifying for a major tournament as San Marino is absurd.

The country has a much smaller population than other European countries and football is the 3rd most popular sport. Asking to name 10 world class players from such a small country is ridiculous.

To be fair, England have as much chance of winning a major tournament as San Marino.

If you’re calling Babb and Breen world class you can add Duff to the list, oh and that unknown player, Roy Keane.

To be fairer, we have a better chance as you have to qualify to be in with a chance. Something San Marino and ROI wouldn’t know about.

They have as much chance - namely none unless we allow 48 teams in the next World Cup
