McSheffrey Mk II (2 Viewers)

How do people feel about Sheff since his return? Ignoring his first spell with us and focusing solely on the last two seasons, has he really been much better than the usual midfield scapegoats of Clingan, Baker, Bell and Deegan?

I'm not so sure he has - joint top scorer last year but I think he is living on reputation left over from his first dig with us.

You said it yourself, joint top scorer. If he played up top every game i think he score 15+ in league 1.

joint top scorer with a guy who left in january :thinking about:

too inconsistent..... last season played a good game or two then went missing for 3 or 4 ....... he was apparently the key to the "diamond" so it isnt as if he was asked to do much defending for a big chunk of the season and playing at the tip of the diamond he had plenty of attacking opportunities

I think his best days are behind him but has to do better this coming season

Kind of agree.

He wasn't crap for me, but was hugely disappointing. He should have really stood out and shone and he didn't.

This season he should be one of the best players in the whole division.

I bet he isn't though. Like Freddie, the problem lies upstairs with his attitude.

Think he was a bit on the heavy side last year but looks like he has lost quite a bit from what i saw at the Hinckley game.

Hopefully he will have a stormer!

He was poor, nowhere near as quick as he was.
All his goals were at home if I'm correct?
He was woeful away got lost.
He missed that vital pen away at Cardiff also.

He'll never be the player he was.

I think he always gives it his all. If he does have a off game he still usually creates a goal scoring opportunity or two for someone else.

I think he needs a sports psychologist to sort him out. I think he always wants to be the best but sometimes it is as if he puts too much pressure on himself.

Unfortunately for him I think he is more effective from the left.

So it is Sheffers turn for the abuse today. How can anyone put him alongside Fatwood on effort or attitude?

At least we will soon run out of new players to abuse so we can start again with Bell and Baker

There were a number of occasions last season when he didn't pull his weight.

He proved that he could do it and perform at a high level last season but he did disappear in quite a few games too. As a senior professional you would hope he would lead by example.

He used to be my favourite player so I in no way accept the accusation of 'abuse.'

Just don't think he pulls his weight often enough. And i wasn't putting him alongside Freddie, just saying that both have a problem that is mental as much as anything else.

I don't understand the stick this guy gets. In his first season back with us under Boothroyd hewas second or third top scorer and scored some really important winning goals. Then last year he was joint top scorer, again from midfield. Yet people still like to slag him off? He probably would have been relegated the previous season if it weren't for his goals.

Yet if you praise him then you get accused of 'just sticking up for him because he's a Cov kid, anyone else and you'd be slating him'

Crazy.

You say he was similar to Fatwood last season. That IS abuse

Towards the end of last season we had ran out of fit players. Was he playing with a knock like a few players did?

With his pedigree he should have shone brightly last season for us but didn't.

He's a much better player than he showed last year and i think we all know that.

You could argue his pace his diminished over the years - logic says a player of 30 (G Mc) does not have the physicality of a 20 year old and most players suffer in that department even the greats.

When I watch Sheffers play I often see him running the channels through the middle demanding the ball to feet but alas rarely materialises because of the disastrous "Sideways Sammy" tactics from our midfield.

Even the much lauded "Bigi" developed a phobia for not going forward and not playing that incisive FORWARD pass.

As I have mentioned in a previous post take a look at Sheffers U Tube goal medley highlighting his variety of goalscoring with both feet, head, one on ones, individual, long range and opportunist - all provided by midfield and flank service.

So I reckon if AT's tactics provide the ammunition and service to the front line and in particular Gary Mc he will definitely score 15+ goals for us this season.

I wouldn't say he is crap but he is a luxury player. Sometimes if he wasn't pulling his weight it was a luxury to have him on the field on the off chance he would score.

He could play awful all game but then come games would score a goal.

He went through a spell last season when his mind wasn't on it at all and towards the end of the season when it was a dog fight he didn't seem that up for it after his "this is killing me seeing us go down" interview in the CET.

He was poor last season, and for large part of the season before, like OSB said far to inconsistent and actually in a lot of games he did score in contributed very little else to our general play. He has lost a yard of pace which has been massively detrimental to his game. Having said that he is the only player who has a decent goalscoring record for us.

For any chance of top 6 sheffers needs to put in performances of 7-8 of of 10 week in week out not once in 7-8 games.

For a player who is not yet 30 his pace seems to have gone. He looks like a 35 year old at times. He has always scored spectacular goals as opposed to poacher goals which I guess is why he has never been considered a real front man.
He along with other senior pros under-achieved last season and so owes the club an improvement in consistency and effort.

Solution - unshackle Sheffers from the "left midfield/wing back/left wing" strait jacket and give him the frigging ball to feet from midfield instead of "Sideways Sammy and Hoofballing" to the opposition - wake up AT and use this guys natural goal scoring flair - he has still got it.

Inconsistent but there have been worse players than him by far, he was woeful up to Christmas last year but was then probably our best player behind Norwood in the second half of the season.

As long as he gives his all in every game I'll be very happy - what really annoys me is players not trying - got to work harder than ever now - could still be a star for us

i think personally ..sheffers plays better in a better team,i know that sounds bleeding obvious but i dont think he plays well with the weight of the fans on his shoulders ,when he has other decent players or players having a good game around him he seems to play better..sometimes when you watch him and it was the same when marlon was here they are expecting the ball back or better balls and we just have not had the players in recent years to deliver these balls or read the game in the same way

That's the whole basis of my reasoning he just DID NOT get the balls enough from his team mates - Sideways and Hoofball no good to Sheffers - "on the deck in the net" I say.

the thing i found annoying was the number of times he ran towards the player with the ball but always got there too late, yet he is supposed to be quick ...... just seemed to me to do it to make it look good as if he was doing the job.

He wasnt only one though

Sheffers under performed last season but then so did most of the others (especially the senior players). However his contribution was still better than most in terms of our attacking players. He certainly wasn't any worse than Cody, Bell, & Baker. Still think he can offer something especially if played in a 3 behind the central striker and surrounded by quick thinking and quick moving players.
