Tempted to start a thread on BEST midfielder since start of Prem - BUt too many job titles in this area:

Defensive midfield
Attacking midfield
Holding midfield
Wide midfield
etc
etc

So I thought I would major on a much maligned departed midfielder - Micky Doyle, and ask the question would he, if retained, still be a useful member of our ever depleting squad ???

Here was a player who wore his heart on his sleeve took no prisoners and could run all day.

If inly, If only, he could have had some sort of creative quality and weighed in with a few more goals (CCFC record 265 games / 20 goals = 4 per 46 game season !!!) he would surely have been good value in our squad.

Am I being too generous to MD.

I quite liked Doyler. He was a hard worker and a battler. Never shy when it came to tackling (opposite to Mr.Gunnarsson) and as said always ran and ran for the cause (opposite again to Mr.Gunnarsson). I think you certainly lost a creative edge with him in the side however in Thorn's current formation he could have been very handy in the defensive role.

Certainly not the most gifted player but he certainly wasn't terrible. He was more one of those honest workers on the pitch whilst some fans seemed to expect him to be the creative mastermind. As I said, I liked him, I just think certain fans failed to understand him as a player.

Stephen Hughes is another player I liked for similar reasons.

I remember a game a few years ago when somebody went through him, we had a drop ball a few minutes later and he nearly snapped the other fellas leg. We need a player like that.

Honest player, perhaps would have been a useful squad memeber but can't afford his reported £8k p/w to sit on the bench in our position. He had his moments but I think it was probably time for him to move on for the benefit of both parties. I also can't see where he would fit into our current system as he can't pass and could only sit in the holding role that our captain and best player retains.

With Gunnarsson and Doyle gone it will be solely down to Deegan to be a feisty tough midfielder.
I remember a few years a go last game of the season against ipswich, gunna got taken out, seriously injured and he still jumped up and pushed the guy and I think of the pitch he would have lamped him one, we had no subs left and he still played the last 15mins in defence.

Great effort but sometimes a liability, better with Sammy in that spot but need someone who is more creative alongside him.

I personally thought Doyle was a great player as in work ethic and did the simple things. He was never going to get many goals but like already been said would always give 100 percent for the cause and not many do nowadays. I also think he is better than Clingan, who i really think in my opinion is very moderate.

Dreadful player, couldn't pass, trap a ball, head, even tackle to an extent, all basics of football, i'm surpised hes made it so up the football pryamid, Doyle symbolises everything thats wrong with English football (i do know hes irish). I'd rather throw in a kid like Thomas then have another player like Doyle.

Bit like marmite , you either love him or hate him . I always thought he was a good player . He was the sort of player that most teams need , (a spoiler ) , true maybe not the most skillfull etc but does a great job which sometimes goes unnoticed .
Lloyd McGrath was not the best player on the pitch when he played but would have been one of the first on the team sheet .

have you got a pair of eyes? Doyle was better than Clingan??? Clingan can zip the ball about, pick out a teammate 9 times out of ten. All doyle could do was run around kicking people. Your statement is what is wrong with the british game and why our national teams are shite, you rate a clogger who couldn't pass wind over a more elegant, intelligent player. god help us!

With a diamond formation the holding player sits deep and takes the ball from the defenders so that he can start moves.

It is crucial that a good passer plays there. Doyle's passing was v. poor.

At Championship level he should be backup to the first team at best.

Supporters accepting players of the standard of Doyle are the reason we are where we are. If the punters are happy to accept sub standard rubbish, don't be surprised when those in charge continually serve it up.

Pretty much this and what Kuk said.
Sure he gave 100% which was nice to see compared to most on the field looking like they just turned up for their wage packet. But he isn't championship level, never has been and i still believe he was the worst partner in the Hughes/Doyle partnership.

Bizarely both won player of the season

It was even more exposed with the Hughes-Hughes-Doyle trio combination. God we're bad now, but we were awful then

The league in general was a lot worse then. If we had that team now we'd finish bottom

There's so much hate against certain players and opinions, we get it okay, you're spiteful and you want us to be Barcelona, reality check people please, Doyle was good at what he was supposed to do, intimidate players, every team needs a player like that, someone who'll get stuck in, what's wrong with English football is that hardly any players play with passion compared to the rest of the world, german and Spanish football is what it's all about now...

Pretty much my thoughts, although I wouldn't mind him in the squad (not the starting line up) as he adds to the dressing room and in cameo spells. Not for what he earned before either.

I would have kept him as a squad player if he took a huge pay cut from 8k to maybe 2k. I think it was right for him to leave as he wants to play first team football and he obviously wasn't in our long term plans.

There is no hatred from me towards Doyle, I just didn't particularly rate him. I'm not spiteful either, and while I would like us to be able to play like Barcelona, that isn't a very realistic prospect is it? I harbor no ill will or resentment towards Doyle, but I won't pretend he was a poor mans Essien either.

An honest and loyal Attitude, coupled to a good engine,
But his remit for 90 mins was to scurry round, antagonising and kicking players, with the end result, that he would get booked, and miss a few games, then start the process over again, never really quite good enough, in my opinion.
