Midfield assuming we sign Jennings and Barton and play 4-1-2-1-2 (2 Viewers)

Will our midfield look like this:

Jennings

Barton Thomas

Fleck

Assuming this is the M, where does this leave McSheffrey? I personally don't rate him highly but he was out top goal scorer last year, so, should he play upfront?

Yeah, when I thought aloud about a possibly starting line-up (featuring Thorn's favoured diamond), this is the same stumbling block I faced. Sheffers could be pushed up front with Cody, with Ball on as an impact sub? I am not always fully sold on 'little - little' strike partnerships, but at least we could start thinking about getting our little triangles at work in more dangerous areas of the pitch. I wondered if Fleck or McSheffrey might do a job in the middle of the park, perhaps at Thomas' expense (so as to accommodate both), but I would guess that would leave plenty of defensive questions, not to mention shape. Not a bad dilemma to have (numbers-wise), although there is still the whole square peg element it would seem.

A possible alternative (although perhaps derided for being too defensive in not having two out-and-out strikers) might be to play four (perhaps McSheffrey - Barton - Jennings - Baker) across the middle, Fleck in the number 10 free role in front of that, and Cody as the number 9 poacher further in front still. I am not being dismissive of Thomas at the expense of two players I have seen little of, I think all (if signed) will play a large part in proceedings - unless they turn out to be shit or injured.

*EDIT - (I wish I'd put a few more brackets in there). (Sorry).

From Thorns interview it sound as if we'll be playing a certain system at home then a certain system away or depending on who we're playing. One will be with the 41212 with the 3 central midfielders and the other will be a system which incorporates wingers and probably just 1 striker, not the 4231 it seems after what he's said.

I didn't hear the interview. Do you think the system with wingers and 1 striker will be an interchangeable 4-3-3 with the ball and 4-5-1 without?

It does seem that way. However, he also said in the interview that the system we used against Wrexham will be scrapped, so who knows what will happen. The 41212 is his favoured formation so will be the one we see most next season (possibly the reason we havent seen the signing of any wingers?). He said the system used in games prior to Accrington was going to be a system we were going to try away from home and now it's being scrapped so i take it there is a plan b in production for away games if this is how he wants it to work?

if we play the diamond, I wouldn't want Mcsheffery in the two CMs, he even said himself he's a really bad defender.

Only tip of the diamond, LM or Striker the only positions he should play!

I'm hoping we do not sign Jennings very ordinary player - mind you Deegan was fairly ordinary i suppose....cannot help but think there are far better midfielders about on free's than both Jennings or Barton.......we do need centee mid cover though so better than nothing I suppose! :(

Whoever suggested Mcsheffrey as one of the neural CM's deserves to be banned from the Ricoh.

Also he's not a striker, never has been either. When was the last time he played upfront?

Who realistically do you think we should sign then and what's your experience of watching Jennings and Barton?

He came through there but his success has been on the left, other than a run of form under Eric Black.

Yes I think he creates havock on left.
However it is not correct to say he has never been a striker.
Think he would do a job in the hole if needs be aswell.

He IS a striker, ask him yourself. And when did he last play there? Last season: he said it was "the best hour of my life in the last 5 years".

He didn't play there Saturday though, he was the left of three players behind two forwards. Just because he's vaguely in a left-centre position, doesn't make him a CM. That formation Saturday only had one CM by the end..and he is a striker!

He filled a hole there a few times, he's not a striker.

"I want to play up front, I'm a striker, I've always been a striker" -Gary McSheffrey, CT, August 2011.

So Jennings is very ordinary? How much have you seen him play? My eldest lad was a season ticket holder with Motherwell for the last 3 seasons whilst Jennings was there. When we were first linked with him I spoke to a few of his mates. He was one of the main reasons they made it into Europe for this season. He ran the show for them in midfield. Very good engine. Motherwell wanted to keep him. All the fans wanted to keep him. But you know better than anyone that has watched him play it seems. I suppose you will next say he is a Motherwell reject.

He was a striker, but we first started to play him on the left as it was at a time we had decent strikers and playing him on the wing gave us a good winger as well as a player on the pitch that was like an extra striker. Brum paid a lot of money for him to play him as a winger. They already had strikers, so he stayed on the wing for them. He came back to us. We needed creativity so we kept him on the wing.

So I suppose a winger that can score goals could never be a striker? :thinking about:

It will be hard to fit Jennings, Barton and Fleck in their best positions, perhaps is 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1. We'd actually be a little spoilt for choice when Thomas comes back.

Also where would be slot in Kilbane,Elliot, Mcsheffrey, Baker ( who has sounded good per season ).

Those three would fit very naturally into the diamond in my opinion. Jennings at the base, Barton as one of the two CMs and Fleck at the front.

I reckon we'll go 4-2-3-1, Jennings and Barton as the central partnership with Thomas and another signing as back-up would actually excite me.

Options!
