I think there's quite a few average club managers with promotions on their CV, Ian Dowie, Aidy Boothroyd, Paulo Di Canio, are 3 examples.

He's a lovely guy, but he's still living off the promotion from nearly 20 years ago.

Always likely to end this way imo although sooner than expected. He didn't like the setup at Sunderland as more & more was being taken out of his hands in terms of recruitment etc. with him not having the final say on players & WBA run a similar structure to that too.

Obviously they are a big club & I understand his desire to jump back in quickly after some time out of the game but perhaps not the best fit.
