My take on the Pompey implosion (1 Viewer)

I was at the match yesterday, sat in the Pompey stand (long story) just behind Lampard and the subs bench. I haven't been to a game for a while, and although I've watched every match on tv, I had a great view of the game and what was going on, on the pitch, and it was an eye opener.

Right from kick-off we looked good, lots of running off the ball, short sharp passes between MVE, Torp and Saka.

But it looked as though they'd been told to hit long balls over the top for Bassette to run onto, and / or switch play from MVE to EMC by hitting long cross field passes, this worked for the first ten minutes or so but Pompey got wise to it and were pushing their line higher and higher.

Bassette was playing right off the shoulder of their CB's and was caught offside a lot but Lampard was telling him to stay high, he also went down looking for free kicks several times which started to rile the Pompey fans and at one stage Lampard told him to "get up" but he looked quick, dangerous, full of running and with more composure, could have had a hat- trick in the first 20 minutes.

I honestly thought everything had clicked and we were going to absolutely smash Pompey, we looked a league above, our players more skillful and comfortable on the ball.

BUT... As soon as Pompey scored the atmosphere changed big time, the crowd got noisy and the Cov players started to look less and less confident on the ball and the composure went out of the window. You could tell that the combination of the crowd and the mistake for the goal got to them, more than it should.

I thought we might turn it around in the second half but Pompey came out more aggressive, and with the home crowd louder and less forgiving, they could clearly smell blood and were playing a higher press not giving our boys a moment on the ball until the errors started creeping in across the back four and we couldn't clear the ball or play out from the back, every mistake getting a louder reaction from the crowd to the point where our players started arguing amongst each other and everything literally went to shit, I've never seen capitulation on such a grand scale and it went across the whole team.

My opinion based on yesterday:

1. Sheaf clearly has ability but is not captain material and is low on confidence, he faded as the game went on.

2. Pompey, were far less "cultured" or skilled as us but they were up for it, whereas we weren't at all once their first goal went in and that's what made the difference, we had no fight in us.

3. There appeared to be little or no team spirit / camaraderie between players right from the warm-up. They actually all looked pissed off, even before the goals went in and a team full of individuals, not a coherent group.

4. Jay De Silva is not only a weakness defensively but his constant stopping when in possession and playing the ball backwards / sideways, kills off any chance of attack, either resulting in a loss of possession or going back to our keeper to start all over again, wasteful and frustrating to say the least.

5. Pompey players, Matt Richie in particular were very vocal, shouting instructions, cheering each other on, our players weren't, other than gesticulating to each other when they lost the ball or missed a pass, this happened alot lot. Surprisingly the most vocal and physical of our players was Torp, who although not his best game, was the most "captain like" on the pitch, followed by Rudoni who definitely has something about him.

6. Latebeaudiere although slow comes across as the senior figure in the group and although the game was long gone by the time he came on, did bring some much needed calmness at the back after everyone else had lost the plot.

7. Collins has a great throw on him but everything else is awful and we need to get either Wilson or preferably Dovin back in and stick with it long term. There is zero cohesion or communication between defenders and goalkeeper, again they all looked pissed off with each other.

8. We have no one who will take a game by the scruff of the neck, again Matt Richie was doing this for Pompey, and this made a massive difference to them.

9. We're clearly a talented bunch on the ball, great touch and skill, possibly more suited to premier league football in style but seriously lack the passion, guile anf leadership needed in abundance in this league, and that will be our downfall unless we buy in some experienced talent in January but this will be very difficult.

10. BTA is a great guy, he smiled and waved at my 9 year old during the warm-up when he was shouting his name even though he looked confused by the fact that we were in the Pompey stand!

What I don't understand is Portsmouths game was all about aggression and set pieces and they knew the fragility of Collins. They crowded him as much as possible without fouling, So why are we not leaving 2 players up on their corners etc! What can JDS and Saka do in the box against their 6 footers. 2 up front 1 player out on the edge of area means they have to use 4 or 5 players which cannot crowd the area. And if we clear the ball out of danger it will more than likely stick.

Yeah, we noticed a lot of that yesterday - not the vocal part obviously from where we were - but their crowd were more or less silent until they scored, then the "Blue Army" chants started and, I guess, due to the stadium being old and quite tight, the sound was tremendously loud and made a real difference.

I have thought Torp out of all the players on the pitch could be captain material. Sheaf isn't. The ref made some ridiculous decisions yesterday as other refs have and you want your captain to get in the ref's ear, but he never does that. Hopefully, the armband will be passed on sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I never get the corner thing. Was it Hull or Cardiff who left a couple of players up. Van Ewijk would be useful too as he has so much pace a long ball out of defence after a corner has the potential to cause all sorts of carnage.

On point 5, we made a major fuck up not replacing the experienced players we lost and I put that mainly on King.

The King cucks will say that its not on him but Saddle has said as much and I believe him.

I can't swallow the notion that Robins, after always having a sprinkling of old heads in the squad, decided not to bother.

Hopefully Lampard is able to correct this in January.

Your focus on Matt Ritchie in particular is one of the things that stood out to me too, he's an experienced player who leads by example to the players around him which feels like something we're crying out for. If we could somehow find another Kyle McFadzean that'd do me nicely

Definitely.

It's the only thing that makes sense

What I don’t understand and can’t is this is the same team pretty much when we went 3-0 down at Wembley, decided to keep going. When we went 2-1 down at wolves to keep fighting.

The mentality in this group is so fragile and weak. Can argue shit happens in football but I can’t forgive surrendering on the pitch and just giving up. Needs addressing asap

We've come from behind several times this season as well.
I really don't know what happened Saturday, but it was pathetic.

I don't like thinking it, but I guess that it's easy for them to motivate themselves in high-profile games (see also THFC at home this season) but not in unglamourous circumstances such as yesterday?

I was out yesterday at a pub with the THFC/Liverpool game on the telly, and it was interesting seeing the difference between THFC when they had a big deficit and us on Saturday; they must have been thoroughly demoralised but at least kept going, whereas after the third goal every one of our players looked like they just wanted the game to be over.

I just kept thinking during the second half: Do they even care?

Think there is always an issue when you sell us as come here and go the prem. While the quality wasn’t as good, in 22/23 for the young lads we were an opportunity to show yourselves on the big stage and for the signings we were the biggest club they had been at. Most gave it there all as being here was the achievement not what comes next.

Yeah you might be on to something. I went to Wright's appearance at the Tavern shortly after he signed and in hindsight he said something pretty revealing, that the club's pitch to him was that one way or another, he'd reach an elite level through playing for Coventry City.

Can only comment on the only player I met. When I went to Luton I won some corporate tickets, there we met Tats. When asked how he felt is was going he said something to the effect of we keep our heads down and we are confident about the premier league.

I remember thinking, lovely bloke but can we focus on the championship first. Think it even more now with the performances being put in

Second half was as bad as I can remember (50 years) of watching us. Embarrassing lack of effort and devoid of anything resembling professional sportsmen.
I'm still bewildered by "that" performance, the player's should be ashamed.

The game is all about momentum. Sometimes we have it. But we concede so many goals, so many of them stupid ones, that it means you’re dragging yourself along all the time. The Collins howler on Saturday completely switched the momentum. Roll into that Kings business based transfer strategy and we have an issue. Others have quite rightly focussed on Ritchie. Not a name on anyone’s transfer list of wants. But if we had him (or someone like him) we’d probably have 9-10 more points in the board.
