I am annoyed by people saying we spent £20m or whatever this season, like that is all that has happened transferwise. Yes we have spent that, but we have also lost £35m of talent, so in reality the net spend so far is -£15m ie the value of the squad is £15m less.

I think we well overacheived last year and lost an exceptional midfielder and one of the best strikers we, or anyone else outside the prem, have had in a long time. I am as disappointed as anyone about how some of the new signings are playing at the moment, but whether we spent the money well or not is another matter.

We have spent £20m to replace £35m it isnt happening yet, is anyone really surprised?

I think it’s possible to argue both things at the same time - that it’s understandable we’d regress given the calibre of the players we lost, but the amount of money we’ve spent trying to replace them should have yielded better results than it has.

I was wondering about that. Didn't we theoretically have one of the lowest value squads last season? And that would have been with Gyokeres and Hamer. Once they left it could have been argued our squad was worth barely anything - and O'hare was a long term injury. So you're trying to build a decent squad from nothing, whilst a lot of other clubs in the division will have already had decent squads, and not needed to spend big.

It’s not as simple as amount in versus out equals better or worse squad. Do you class Gyokeres as £20m or £1m as he’s had both values as part of our squad? We might have a £30m player somewhere that we don’t know about yet.

Rubbish.

Other than those two we probably had one other player (Sheaf) who belonged in a top 6 squad. Dabo made 27 apps and he’s now in league two ffs.

The money thing is a bit of a wet argument.

Whilst we've certainly lost two amazing players, we've signed loads of new ones which should be better combined than those two, and other squad players that have left who generally weren't anything special.

We've spent about 10 million worth on defenders, which includes some pretty sought after names. We also signed a first choice goalkeeper, threw several million at a winger that seems to be sitting on the mantlepiece, and two strikers who (on paper at least) most teams in this league should be envious of. Simms alone, but then you have Wright, who has got to be one of the biggest transfers in the division.

There's absolutely no excuse for us sitting in 20th place, and I am definitely surprised how it has turned out. Other than central midfield, the whole squad should be doing better. Like I've said before on here though, I think a lot of this is down to the management rather than the recruitment.

We also had several loan players who more than matched the performance of our own. Losing Gyo and Hamer was only part of our problem. The rebuild, with fewer loans is another step along the road to the Prem.

Agree on the loan signings point, it’s a good point as we had some really good loans.

how can you talk about the premiership with 3 wins out of 16 and looking like we’re in a real fight to stay in this league though?

there’s no sentiment in football, and if we’re in a real relegation scrap by Christmas I would have thought king will be seriously considering
the manager and if he does stick with robins who has been great for us no denying that at all, whether he gets a large sum of money.

for me the drastic change to 4/3/3 even though it might be a good one, is desperation, hoping something sticks, after sticking to a formation for 5 years or so.

What’s happened is we’ve lost the two best game winners in the division, two of the better CBs, and our rock steady captain has (understandly) faltered a bit.

We need to rebuild, it may not happen overnight. But Robins has shown that generally he gets us there over a two year period. Panicking now and heading back to the days of Coleman and Thorn is just mental to entertain.

I dunno. I didn’t see us flipping Chaplin in L1. I imagine it depends what comes up. There’s rumours around Wright who is the obvious one. Maybe a CB, maybe MvE if he doesn’t settle. Who knows. I think there would be buyers, probably abroad.

The other thing I’d say is people ask “would you trust Robins with the money?” I’d counter: “What about King makes you trust him with a managerial appointment?”

There’s every possibility that a noob chairman has been over charged in his first dealings with other clubs. And he’s not shown himself to be someone who either understands football on a deep level or is willing to take advice from those who do. I’d be very worried about an “instant success” style appointment tbh.

Flogging Wright and co to interested clubs in January would be such a huge admission of failure from the management that I can’t understand why people on here are even considering it.

I agree with everything in this, but quite honestly some of MR's decisions this year have completely baffled me, and IMO this hasn't helped the situation. The first game of the season we made 3 substitutions in one go, 2 of which were totally untried, when we were well in control of the game. 3 points tossed away there IMO.
Some of the team selection and continuity since then has been like pre-season training games, where a manager tries out different players and systems to see what works and what doesn't.
One of the key ingredients of a successful team is continuity.

We would have said that about Chaplin as well. But we sold him cos he wasn’t working really. I don’t know what the Turkish clubs rumoured would pay TBH. I’m only mentioning wright because there’s rumours and I don’t think we’d flip in Jan, more likely next season.
