No More Transfers? (1 Viewer)

Listening to the interview Mark Robins gave to CWR yesterday, he seemed to indicate he won't be getting any more players in this transfer window unless some players he currently has leave the club and that would then force him to change things. He also seemed to get a bit annoyed when the interviewer asked him about Bright Enobakhare and Robins kept replying "He wasn't our player, he wasn't our player".

This all seems a bit strange because a week ago he seemed to imply he was looking to bring three more players in, but now we have signed Matt Godden, Robins feels our business is done in this transfer window. So is that it or does anyone think Robins is hustling and will still bring someone else in?

Most likely we overpaid for Godden and he needs to release/loan out a couple to free up some funds for a loan or 2.

Don’t get why people think we need more transfers/loans we’ve just spent a reported 750k on a striker & people still want more players brought in.I don’t even think we’ve over paid for Godden either 750k for a player who is proven at this level that’s the market.

Although Mark Robins was clearly playing his cards close to his chest, the vibe he was giving out was he wasn't actively looking to bring any more players in. However I will listen to the interview again and if I got it wrong, I will happily admit that.

With the loan market you get someone usually from a prem or championship team development/ unders squad which sometimes works and then when Christmas comes around we all either cannot wait for them to fuck off back to their parent club or start a frenzy of will he or won't he stay

The poor guy can't win. Last year when we spent over £1M (reportedly) on 3 players Baka, Chaplin, and Hiwula, most of us said, if only he would have spent that money on one proven goalscorer. Now he has done that he is still getting criticised.

I think, as regards loans, the only reason to bring one in would be that said player would be an automatic first teamer.

Last season we had two types. Sterling, who we (guessing here) probably did not contribute much to his wage on the proviso that he was a starter, which he was after that tricky game at Bristol. Then we had Thomas, who probably cost more as it was likely that other L1 clubs wanted him to be a starter too.

I won't mention the panic loan in Meyler!

Also I wasn't making a comment, I was merely asking a question if people think we will do anymore business this transfer window or not. However I will add a question mark on the title thread to make that clear.

Sorry this over paying for Godden is bollox, I’m no mathematician but getting a million in for a player, Chaplin, and replacing him for a reported £750k hardly soaks any budget up and I won’t mention Bayliss, I’m not saying MR should run around splashing cash either and there’s this ffp to work alongside.
I suspect the loss of revenue due to the avoidable St. Andrews farce from a business already running at a loss to be a major factor. My concern what happens next season if we haven’t returned home when perhaps we haven’t got these million pound players to juggle with.

Having got that off my chest and going back to topic, despite what MR said I’ll be surprised if a loan or two don’t materialise before September window closes but I suspect some players will have to go out first.

This is what Robins was talking about in the interview. Explains why player sales only count as turnover once the instalment has been paid to you and how a cup run can be included during the season to help you increase wages due to this.

What it may come down to is whether a PL club are going to want £££s for loaning a player, or whether they want him to get experience. If it is £££s and there is competition from other clubs, we may lose out, but then again our reputation (academy, developing youngsters) may count in our favour. We may also be able to offset any costs through loaning a few of ours out? As others have said, let's wait and see. Might be worth waiting anyway. to see whether we pick up injuries in key areas.

Don't get me wrong loans can obviously bring in some very good players, and has worked brilliantly in the past. But i sort of like the fact that we are going into a season with a squad of contracted Coventry City players and not 5 perms and 10 loans.

How much was Marquis about 1m? If so maybe we paid a bit too much. I hope however the deal was more like 500k with success related add ons and if that's the case we will not mind it too much if we spend the other 250k as it means we may well have been promoted!!

What makes you think Meyler was a panic loan?

Marquis was reported as 2m.

Why? Did you not think the young and hungry like Thomas did not give his all for the cause? Did Sterling not want to do his very best each week and prove a point to his parent club? I think if the attitude of the player is right and they have the required ability to improve the first team. I don't mind who their contracted to.
Only thing I don't like is loans with a 24h call back clause as this can be disruptive.

Who knows if it's true! Like every transfer it's reported as undisclosed these days. We don't actually know we paid 750k for Godden.

Pompey paid a reported 2m for Marquis we paid a reported 550-750k for Godden looking at their records Godden looks the slightly better player,same height & age.

Or for that matter that we got £3m for Chaplin and Bayliss.

All you can really do is ask is the club still running and are we competitive? And the answer to both is yes IMO.

I am happy with our squad, a striker was the priority signing and we got one and hopefully a very good one at that.

We have spent over a million on transfer fees this year if you think Godden 700/750k Allen 200/250k then Kastaneer and Jobello aswell.

Yes we have sold players but I am sure you can only spend 60% of income with FFP, well atleast that's what Tim Fisher used to go on about.

I think Robins was being deliberately obtuse in the interview. He alluded to having spent the budget and not bringing anyone else in but then in almost the same breath said that he would love to do more business and 2 players may be leaving the club which would free up funds. I believe he also said that the sale of Bayliss had more than freed up enough funds to sign Godden. I suspect the budget may have been a bit fluid this window anyway as it was reasonable to expect both Madison and Wilson to move on, neither of which happened in the end so earlier comments he made about wanting x amount of players were probably contingent on those sell-on clauses coming in

I also think Robins is happy with the squad at the moment, and as mentioned before we don't have the funds to pay for a loan.
But, what if they are loans without a fee, to get game time into younger players? I saw this morning that Rolando Aarrons and Jamie Sterry aren't in the Newcastle premier league squad, a nippy winger and right back cover, I'd be very happy with that.

I think MR was/is also hoping to get a few more off the books, either permanently (ie Brown, Bosma, Hickman) and a few on loan (Maycock, Allassani etc) to free up some wage capacity. As that hasn't happened (yet) I guess his hands are a bit tied at the moment. It may also be his other main targets like Bright didn't happen and he's not identified an alternative he considers worth taking the chance on. It may also be that with people like Eccles impressing over pre-season he's decided he doesn't need to bring bodies in because he feels there is enough in the development squad to cover if the need arises.
We've actually got quite a lot of players in most positions taking into account the entire squad.

Am all for the general principle of permanent signings ahead of loans. Loans should be to augment, rather be the foundation.

Loans are good for a little bit of unpredictable magic. Unless an emergency I wouldn’t want a loanee in the spine of the team, especially as they’re usually young. But for a bit of pace and/or skill above the norm they’re ideal.
