Nuneaton Town v Coventry City friendly (1 Viewer)

Just read the game finished 0-0. Anyone on here go to the game? According to the CCFC Mad live text the City fans started getting frustrated with the team, doesn't sound too good. Still better to get bad results out of the way and it was only a friendly. Sounds like we were unlucky not to score and dominated the game nevertheless. Apparantly a chap wearing only a baseball cap and boxer shorts invaded the pitch!!! Hahahahaha

Although a little disappointed with the result, it's still only a friendly for the players to get some match fitness without getting injured and practice different formations and tactics. I can see the doom and gloom merchants coming out in full force after this one...

For people that went what kind of football did we play? Did we play the hoof ball style everyone labelled Aidy with or did we pass the ball around... And how was our new Keeper who was on trial? Smeekes have a good game?

In all honesty i don't think we played one long ball the whole game. Boothroyd looks as if he wants us to play a passing game. Richard Keogh looked very lively as did O'Hallaron. But you could definitely tell it was a friendly, a very casual game. It looked like we played mostly our first team for the first hour then after it was our second, plus Gunnar and Cranie maybe. The cov fans were getting frustrated and started moaning when we were passing around the defence (which i've never understood) and were urging the players to get the ball forward. The Goalkeeper did what little he had to quite clinically and Smeekes looked quite good, he looks very quick, i'd say a Clinton Morrison with pace maybe? Anyone know where Eastwood is? Westwood was probably in Scotland.....

As for the streaker, probably the most hilarious thing i've ever seen.

We played some good passing football, in a 4-5-1/4-3-3 type system, without creating too many chances. The on-trial keeper did well without really having a shot to save. Smeekes was probably about the best player on the pitch. Very quick and looks like a good potential addition to the squad.

Important to remember this was against poor opposition though so hard to tell how good a signing he would be.

Don't think its time for doom & gloom yet. This was a glorified training session and they had clearly been told not to worry too much about scoring goals. One or two would have been nice though!

living in Lincoln now, means i can't do the "friendlies" as much so those that went have the right to moan!! but why go to a glorified training session that is designed to get people match fit and to help mould new additions into a team and have a pop!! we need to peak for 7 Aug that's it, yes the performances should improve but to get restless after 1 full game realy, is beyond me.
Rant over, seems we did okay, orlando seems decent and we are playing flowing attacking football i gather. Lets see the moves start to create some movement in the onion bag now though.

Didn't Newcastle lose 7-1 or something to Darlington in pre-season this time last year? Doesn't mean anything, our situation will become clearer when the season starts and even then you can't tell where you will end up until about 4 or 5 games from the end! This is a tight league, gotta say I love the Championship and I like being in this league. Would be nice to go to all the big grounds in the Premiership but I think the Championship is more exciting then the Prem in terms of who will finish where and dodgy results here there and everywhere! Love the banter as well, and I think there is always a mutual respect in a way between Championship fans because we are all loyal to our team and are 'proper' supporters unlike those who have jumped on the 'big 4' bandwagon. Much rather travel around the country in good voice cheering on the Sky Blues than watch Man U play on tele wearing slippers and sitting on the sofa.. All good fun.

I agree, friendly results mean little,it's better to play well and lose than play bad and win in a friendly. To compare us to Newcastle though!!,yes they got thumped in a friendly last pre-season but it was clear to see that they had the players then to go straight back up to the prem.We have'nt.
I think we will finish up the same again, although the striking department is a HUGE concern.Eastwood is currently our main striker and thats a worry.Im sure Aidys on the case.I think Clingan and Doyle will do a good job in the middle of the park, and because Doyle has got someone decent next to him i think we will see a better Michael Doyle, remember when Dennis Wise partnerd him?
One big concern for me is Martin Crainie,he must hate being shoved here there and everywhere,Right Back,Left Back,Centre Half and even midfield in pre season.Maybe the Norwich rumours are true. For me he should be our first choice right back,so why sign Keogh when we have Clarke aswell.Boothroyd has also said he wants another centre-half,and whilst i agree with this,he's basicly ruling Crainie out for that position to isnt he? It would'nt suprise me at all if Crainie is no longer with us come August 7th,i hope im wrong.

I was suprised with the amount of Cov fans there, i was expecting 200/300 tops but around 300 were queing outside the ground when the terrance (holds 1,500) was 2 thirds full.

I really enjoyed watching us pass the ball around, pass and move, pass and move.

Not fussed with the result one bit.

By comparing us to Newcastle, I wasn't implying that we were going to go on and win the league or anything, just showing people that pre-season results don't mean a lot - on the official CCFC facebook page a lot of people seemed upset and worried by the 0-0 draw!! I personally think we will finish around 14th if we make a couple more shrewd signings. I think we should go for a 4-2-3-1 formation, I think Clingan and Doyle/Deegan would make a perfect holding midfield pairing with Doyle/Deegan doing the rough work and Clingan dictating play. Then McSheffrey LAM, Baker CAM/CF and O'Donovan RAM. People might think this is a bit defensive but when we're on the ball I think having McSheffrey, Baker and O'Donovan in and around the box we could do some damage going forward. Not sure who the striker should be, depends who we sign. This formation also makes way for the full backs to bomb forward which AB has said he wants and if we lose the ball and the full backs are far up the pitch, Doyle and Clingan will track back to help defence. Seeing as now Deegan is injured and Doyle has been playing in the pre-season games, looks like Doyle will be staying with us this season. This is just my humble opinion anyway, I know a lot of people won't agree with a 5-man midfield but I just think 4-4-2 is too predictable.

Yeah. I read on a match report of the game that some Cov fans were getting impatient with us passing the ball around and were urging City to get the ball forward! I bet the fans that moaned all the time about using longball are the same ones urging the team to get the ball to get to the other end of the pitch ASAP when we do pass the ball around!

Some geezer was boo'ing at full-time.
There's is really no pleasing some people.

"STOP HOOFING IT UP!" next week "GET IN THEIR BOX!"

embarrasing.
