I agree with Les Reid here – “the council and Wasps should sit down, talk and work to keep Coventry City in Coventry for next season”.
There are many ways to look at the history behind all this, but I mostly identify far more with the Council’s stance than SISU’s. It’s not just Duggins is it? Some seem to believe paid officers and elected Councillors of all parties and have been waging an unfair war on CCFC for decades, which is hard to buy.
But the Council has to honour its commitment that the football club wouldn’t be threatened by the sale to Wasps. We should be allowed to keep playing at the Ricoh on sensible terms, and unfortunately at present that still means dealing with SISU. Since the Council (and Wasps) believe they are in the right, they should continue to defend themselves in court against whatever cases SISU have a legal right to bring up. It’s a frustrating load of bollocks (and depressingly it seems to be largely about Seppala’s personal pride) but anything is better than leaving the city again.
Either SISU are right about the Wasps sale or they are not – so where are their principles in saying they will drop legal action if the council helps them build another stadium?! If they want to progress the idea, they can put in an outline planning application which needn’t cost very much and doesn’t require any agreements on land purchase. That will test whether it’s likely to be acceptable in planning terms (my guess is not, even if that western link road is ever built). I really don’t see why the City Council should spend millions on infrastructure to help a second big stadium, because IMO the one we have already got needs two thriving sports clubs to make it viable. So another stadium is at best several years away, and more likely a fantasy.
If I thought a season (or two) playing somewhere else would lead to a change of ownership and a glorious return, I’d be up for it. But CCFC being taken hostage again (or being wrongly forced into exile if you see it that way) could be for many years this time, which would kill the club in all but name. We can’t fall victim to yet another unforgiveable blunder, we simply have to play in Coventry.
