It doesn't work that way. We own him, so we don't have to buy him. They would have to and they can't afford it, I think is the point.

I don't think the rumor is true for one second. That said Sunderland might be able to afford him. Yes, they would have to buy him and pay wages, but with season ticket sales over 28,000 they might have some decent funds. Large transfer fees are often structured over more than a year with various add-ons. The upfront part can often be relatively low compared to the potential end fee (if ever reached).
