Can anyone tell me the best way to Oldham?

I think that Flowers claimed that Dowie's lot were responsible, but Ray 'Debt Free' Ranson told us something else.

I would be surprised if it was Thorn, as he arrived nearly 4 months after they arrived. That is, unless he was working uncover for us whilst employed elsewhere.

Thorn was at Ipswich, Everton and then was working with Coleman at Fulham. He wasn't here when we signed Dann or Fox.

Quite correct, apologies. I can only assume a particularly fine Rioja had me all at sea.

I presume you don't mind me taking Dann and Fox from that list then, but could I add in Gunnarsson? He signed about 3 months after Thorn was appointed chief scout. Could I also add the names of Jack Cork and Jordan Henderson; both of whom were unknowns and whom he got to the club on loan, and another unknown from the Newcastle reserves who had just come back from a loan spell at Preston - a certain Andy Carroll? SISU refused to part with the cash to bring all three players to the club for less than £2m. Not Thorn's fault that the players he scouted would not be signed.

He also scouted Gary Madine too - what's he worth now?

To come back to my original point - his record as a scout shouldn't be questioned

Gunnarsson was recommended to Coleman by Heidar Helguson.

Of course, Thorn is a decent enough scout though, no questions from me.

I agree that he obviously is a decent scout with a track record in that area. What that does not mean is he would make a good manager. I cannot think of any scout that changed into a managers role which suggests the skills required are different. Mourinho was not just a scout but fulfilled many other roles and it was his working relationship with Bobby Robson that most attribute to his success.

There is no correlation at all, dear chap. However, Thorn - upon occassion - gets ridiculed for bringing Bell to the club. The scout's role is to bring talent to the attention of the manager and his assistant and to act upon 'tip-offs'. He doesn't decide who gets signed and on what terms. So, in the season Bell was signed for a reported £500K, he's not responsible if SISU/the manager refuse an option on Henderson. Ditto the next season when sideways-Sammy gets a deal and Jack Cork and Gary Madine - who had both been here on loan - and Carroll aren't of interest.

In fact if you think about it, in the four years he's been here; and only some of that he's been exclusively operating as a scout, we've had Gunnarsson, Westwood, Keogh and Jutkiewitz all signed as relative unknowns, and Cork, Henderson and Carroll as options he's brought to the table which we, as a club, have refused to pursue. In four years, that's seven hellishly good players that have been scouted. Add into that Norwood, and I think you're being very economical indeed to only label him a 'reasonable' scout

Depends on if they are small but pert, nice handful and firm, large but firmish or just like puppies ears. The bigger and saggier they are the more support you need to give them.

A quick word of advice. Get permission first.
