We played the first game of the new Premiership season.

We beat Middlesboro 2-1 at Highfield Road

The flying postman, John Williams and probably out most underrated player of all time, winger David Smith got the goals.

Glad someone else appreciated Smith. He was never amazing but there was something I liked about his wing play.

I have to admit, I never thought he played for us in the PL. I thought he left before the PL era started.

Was on holiday with parents in Spain. Remember badgering for a paper to find the score, took until Monday to find out.

How communication changes!

Tell you what though, Bobby Gould may not have been the greatest manager we had by any stretch, but given how we'd slumped under 0-0s and 0-1s all over the place under Don Howe, to transform us with just a little bit of pace into a side who could score goals (and stay up!) was amazing, really.

Remember us against ipswich that year. Williams gave John Wark a head start time and time again, but still breezed past him at will just by running fast!

With a forward line of Quinn, Rosario, Gallacher & Ndlovu we should've finished a lot higher that we did that that season.

smith was very slow, could beat a player but then couldn't get away from him and would have to do it again until he could pass it or lose it.

In fairness, the forward line was decimated by the March transfer deadline with Gallacher and Rosario sold (we were 4th in early March) and finished 15th.

Also in fairness, it was Gould who got Rosario playing, after he looked diabolical beforehand.

I don't think I've ever got over the sale of Kevin Gallacher such was my devastation.

Smith was very good, I've got an old dvd of one of our seasons, where Smith was instrumental in virtually everything good we produced, people have short memories.

That's the problem with those goals packages. Smith was integral to so many of them he looks an amazing player on them. But the highlights clips don't include the failed crosses, the inability to go past the full back or cut inside or the sheer inadequacy to hit a Skyblue shirt from a corner.

Nothing against David Smith looked a great prospect in 1987-88 but Charlton's John Humphrey kicked him into the stand halfway through his first season and he never looked the same to me after that.

Er yes there was, they packed the away end in the Kop and seating area in the Sky Blue Stand and it was there first game after promotion

I thought the kop had gone at this time,to make way for the east stand.
