Coventry City Football Club welcomed the Coventry Telegraph’s questions to all parties involved in the current impasse over an agreement for the Sky Blues future to play matches at the Ricoh Arena.

The Club believes that it is vital to engage all parties – regardless of whether they are public or private organisations – in order to come to a positive resolution. If the current position is not resolved and the football club has no stadium to fulfil its fixtures then the outcome will be inevitable and the impact on the local community of the loss of the football club will be devastating.

For clarity for supporters, we publish the full Coventry Telegraph article here:

Whilst we welcome both Coventry City Council and Wasps confirming publicly that the issue of not agreeing a deal is due to legal actions taken by the club ownership and not an issue with the club per se, we feel it is critical to point to the fact that the consequence of not reaching a resolution will be permanent and irreversible: The loss of our football club.

In considering whether there will be a future for Coventry City then the club feels duty bound to point to a passage from Coventry City Council’s minutes of Tuesday 7th October 2014 which states:

“The commitment that any deal relating to the Ricoh Arena would not be approved unless the following three tests were satisfied:

  1. A good deal for the City
  2. The security and future of Coventry City Football Club
  3. The security and future of Coventry Rugby Club”
It was appropriate and correct for the leader of Coventry City Council to put forward these requirements at the time of selling the Ricoh Arena to Wasps. The Council’s covenant of commitment to Coventry City Football Club was designed to reassure fans. Indeed, the leader also subsequently stated on the same day:

“Let me be clear, any deal around the future of the Ricoh Arena must not happen if it threatens the future of the Sky Blues or Coventry Rugby Club.”

The Council’s covenant was reiterated on the 8th October: “This deal would not have happened if it threatened the future of the Sky Blues or Coventry Rugby Club.” Once again, reassuring Sky Blues fans.

However, the future of Coventry City Football Club is now under threat.

At the time of announcing the deal with Wasps, the Council failed to minute or present to Coventry City fans, Coventrians and the media that the Council’s covenant to secure the future of the City’s then 131 year old football club would have an expiry date and time limit of just four years…

The council point to a ‘No deal’ outcome being a “direct consequence” of legal action by the football club owners.

What is being painted is a false choice – it does not have to be a case of the Owners dropping the legal action or there is no deal, and it is not a case of “cannot enter discussions”.

In previous years a deal has been achieved by the football club whilst the Owners pursued legal action and that CAN be the case again.

Regardless of the current situation between football club owners, stadium landlord and council, the Club would like to extend an offer to meet with the landlord and the Council with the intention to resolve the issue of the football club having nowhere to fulfil its fixtures from the beginning of next season.

The Club will engage in a constructive and positive manner – with the single aim of saving our football club. The Club entirely agrees with our landlord Wasps wanting to move the situation forward for the good of Coventry City, its supporters, the Ricoh Arena and the City as a whole. The club looks forward to continuing to work together, based on the excellent day-to-day operational relationship we already enjoy.

Equally, we extend an invitation to Coventry City Council to sit and hold constructive discussions to understand how the Council might help resolve the situation for the good of everyone involved. It would be an unmitigated disaster if the club was to fold and disappear in the very year that Coventry holds the title of being the City of Sport. We will work together with the Council to ensure that this does not happen.

The Club is ready to sit at the negotiating table – we want to do a deal. A deal that preserves the football club. It is now time for all parties to work together for the good of Coventry City Football Club, its supporters and our community.

Makes sense, they have done a deal knowing there is legal action.

Glad to see they are at least trying to get a deal sorted now rather than doing all of this in April.

The point will be massively missed though.

Very well put, exactly what I would have said in the club's position. The Trust need to come out with something encouraging talks too now.

I don't think the club have too much choice in it other than things like that.

The approach from the "other side" will be to try and get fans worked up that it's the club forcing the legal action (while we know it is SISU forcing it).

Nice to see the club put the council into the spotlight, also a nice touch reminding them what they said in Oct 2014!

Think that gets forgotten about, the council have effectively shown it was just said to try and get the deal with Wasps through. That was one of the conditions given to councillors before they voted as well wasn't it? Looking at the response to it now, it has basically given them misinformation if it was meaningless.

Do you think Sisu would drop legal action if we really did have to fold the club? I suspect it wouldnt bother them but would be interested if theyd finally concede if it came to that.

Weirdly this is one of the best PR pieces put out by the club.

They are right... imagine being the city of sport and watching your 130 year old football team go bust

Over to you CCC and Wasps

I think it's a much better approach since Boddy has been here. It has tried to explain a bit more and also get across that the club and Wasps have a good working relationship day to day (the JSB party is there for example).

Clearly trying to get the point across that the club is actually helpless and there's no point people demanding the club drop the legal stuff as they have no say.

To be honest I think it would play into Sisu's hands. They'd be able to put a very strong legal case forward saying they were forced out of business by the council and the insects and sue for significant compensation.

We know Sisu don't give a shit about us which is why we need to apply pressure to the other parties.

Also opens them up for more legal action if they don't follow this through possibly? Perhaps another string to Sisu's bow, by highlighting their promise. Will be interesting to see.

Think it raises a lot of good points. Dave Boddy, has done a very good job since his appointment.

I don't get why nobody made a point of it sooner. All it took was it being put to the council (fair play to the telegraph) and seeing their response basically washing their hands with it.

Yes, the deal probably was done within the law but so much about it stunk.

The Facebook comments are as expected though.

Are they along the lines of "just go"?

I'd dread to think if Boddy and Mark Hornby were to walk out.

This is why people need to see the difference between the people running the club and the twats forcing the legal action.

People strangely seem as if they would be over the moon if the club went tits up because they think it would mean SISU going tits up. It's the same as when people say "what are you going to do EFL / FA?". What do they expect them to do?

The consequences of the deal with Wasps were inevitable. Even if SISU did go, whoever takes over the club is in a poor bargaining position and faced with agreeing a deal with Wasps or nothing.

Exactly.

We went from being at the mercy of ACL to the being at the mercy of Wasps, even if we had the best owner in the world who loved CCFC.

Hopefully not empty words and the Council threaten to impose restrictions and increase rates on the stadium that are detrimental to Wasps if they don't hold up to their commitment. This club needs a long term deal resolving and not be here again every12 months and we deserve to be kept informed.

The council can't threaten to increase rates on the stadium. The only thing they could do is exert political pressure which they won't.

I see what you mean now.

It's what happens when people have pushed that SISU is CCFC for so long. If the club goes to shit and they see SISU walk off into the sunset they might realise then.

It benefits other parties for our fans to be like that as if everybody was to say "fuck it, the club is right. the club dont have a choice in this as it's sisu being pricks so give them all hell" then it wouldn't be in any of their interests if the whole fanbase got behind that statement.

Honestly fucking idiots. These fuck wits don't deserve a club

It's the effect of the PR that other people put out. They believe SISU is the club, that's why if the club gets done over they think it's great because they think it's SISU.

All it takes is for people like the trust to say "look, the club isn't SISU". "SISU are absolute bellends but the club are stuck here as they dont have a choice". There is no reason that people can't be fully behind the club while not liking SISU in the slightest.
