This...whilst Sheaf rightly gets plaudits (these days !), Eccles does do a lot of work which often goes unnoticed by many, which is (i presume) why MR gave him a new contract. The stats are pleasing but not surprising. Sheaf and Eccles both have very clever technique in winning the ball. It's a definite skill. With Hamer it's more that he's a human dynamo.
Edit: actually if anything I'm surprised the numbers aren't higher. Eccles in particular seems very adept at gaining possession, which I think is overlooked in terms of contribution to the team.
Agree, Eccles has significantly improved and if he can learn to release the ball quicker when he wins it or has it at his feet and importantly pick the right passes, he will be an even bigger asset for the club. The stats are pleasing but not surprising. Disgrace we offered a young player with potential a new dealBut but but I thought Eccles new contract was a really bad deal!!

If we were able to keep the ball for 2 minutes our entire midfield wouldn't be in the top 20 tacklers in the divisionLet’s say that after getting possession, the team keeps the ball for 2 minutes. If the three players mentioned in the stats win 3 tackles per game each, that could be 18 minutes of possession gained or 20% of the match. A simplistic way of looking at it I know, but that potentially turns a 40-60 game into a 60-40 one.
I bet it’s the kind of thing managers love. It doesn’t have to be aggression or crunching tackles – Sheaf for example is great at sticking out a long leg to nick the ball.
btw on the site I've just looked at, 14th on the list is Kasey Palmer. That should get a few people frothing at the mouth about how stats mean nothing
The missing ingredient from our midfield is goals, regular goals that is. Hamer and O’Hare should weigh in with a few more, double figures from both imo. Then more from Palmer they all have it in their locker.
No-one was saying he shouldn't get a new deal. It was questioning whether four years for a player who has been injured a lot during his time at the club, even in the academy, was sensible. That was, and arguably still is, a valid doubt.Disgrace we offered a young player with potential a new deal
Agree, I have.noticed we seem a bit more positive now in midfield and go forward more especially Sheaf hopefully more goals will follow.Hamer has got 6, Allen has got 7 - you could see both adding to that tally by the season's end. They have contributed this season. Need more from O'Hare when fit and Palmer but it's better than it was.
That's a fair point! If we were able to keep the ball for 2 minutes our entire midfield wouldn't be in the top 20 tacklers in the division
No surprise you missed the point
I know exactly what the point was and it was a stupid one.
Hope you’re right.
Is this the longest run of starts he’s put together for us in his career? He’s started the last 8 I believe.
I want him to make 30+ starts next season before I’d be confident about his injury record.
He’s a fantastic player
Has Paterson been fit ? not sure he has, but I agree a fit Paterson might have been an assetJust seen a post on newsnow come up about our January interest in Jamie Paterson and I do feel if we have had him we could have got some more goals and assists through that AM role seeming as we’ve missed Jamie Allen and Kasey Palmer since January and Sean Maguire was a pointless signing.

Maguire has played more football since January than Paterson. Neither have offered anything - spending £500,000 on Paterson would have been an almighty waste.Has Paterson been fit ? not sure he has, but I agree a fit Paterson might have been an asset

If Hamer leaves we’ll need a new oneWith howley coming through, midfield is ful of riches so not much work re new players needed come the window there.
