Our RB situation (1 Viewer)

Is this something that needs to be addressed? General opinion is that Willis is solid at RB if unspectacular and is obviously a natural CB. Every time Phillips plays the general opinion is that he is 'class' but why doesn't Phillips start every game regularly? Everytime he comes on to cover for injuries he performs well so why isn't he now our number 1 RB?

I'm probably on my own in this but I don't get the Phillips hype if I'm
Honest, defensively I'm far from convinced. Don't think Willis is an RB as its not his game to get forward etc but rather have him than Phillips in the side maybe an option to bring on when chasing the game & not wanting to fully change the formation.

Doesn't need addressing as such. Willis is good enough for league one, solid defensively and pacey, he didn't need to overlap much on Saturday as it would of crowded Armstrong's space to work in, and so would have been counter productive, which is why Phillips didn't get forward much either. Despite Phillips doing well last season as well, he struggled to get a run in the team due to injuries and so perhaps hasn't proved himself consistently, unlike Willis who despite not being spectacular is solid and adds a bit more height to the team.

He was letting the guy inside and very nearly gave a penalty away on one occasion.

the only threat in the 1st half was down the left - constant poor deliveries in however meant no danger
There was no threat at all in the 2nd half

this may or may not be to do with the half time change

Willis and Phillips are both good players. You are looking too much into it. They re both young and learning.

Unfortuantely, though good on the ball, Philips was skinned regularly when he played at right back in some games and he also lacks the physical presence of Willis.

I like Willis but he needs to play CB, he can fill in though. I also do really, really like Phillips. My issue is they're both a bit inexperienced when they face a winger who's proper class in this league, however they are thankfully few and far between. We should be fine, but you never know! If we play a tricky player maybe shift Ricketts across and have Willis CB.

That won't happen, unless injured Ricketts will play central defence every game imo. I think Willis can make a decent defensive full back especially with the likes of Ricketts and Johnson alongside him. If Tony Mowbray gets his wish for right winger we will need a more defensive minded full back

It's a no to shifting ricketts for me, against any sort of pace at right back he would be left for dead, Willis is a good defender and has the pace to go head to head with most wingers.

Saturday showed how good Ricketts is at CB he held the line & the rest of the defence followed suit. Watch him next time you see us play the ball can be down the other end but he's controlling the 3 others CB is the best spot for him for this alone.

About to watch the under 21s looking forward to seeing Kelly Evans, agree about Philips, yet to be convinced.

For right back? Worse than Phillips and Willis in that position.

In a poor side, with a joke manager i agree, having said that i'm more than okay with Willis to be honest.

The line up for the u21's suggest that Haynes, finch, lawton, harries and Kelly Evans won't be involved tmoz even with injuries if they are starting today. If they are it is probably only to make up numbers on the bench.
However with no tudgay, Thomas, Morris or Martin suggests all could start?

Willis came off because of an injury. He was involved in a clash of heads.

because he cant defend for shit instead of standing a player up he does the marcus hall back off and watch thing go back and watch the highlights of sheff united away last season both goals he is at fault for by backing off and leaving his man to much space. willis might not be spectacular but he defends well

I agree. These days fans get excited by full backs who attack and cannot defend.

Phillips defensively looks suspect. It's the Haynes vs Stokes debate. Stokes is limited but can defend. The hype over Haynes was a joke based on a couple of attacking bursts. He will struggle to survive in the game - he is a very very poor defender.

Willis isn't a RB, but he's a very good defender. However, If we want to play with a more set back back 4, I think he's a better option as Phillips is good going forward, but defensively on Saturday Moreis was having to do a lot of covering when he came on which was noticeable.

Don't think it's an area we need to concentrate on though anytime soon. In this league, both can do a decent job

Don't forget that Chris Hussey was once compared to Gareth Bale by the experts on here

Joe Royal is in charge of loaning players out at Everton and is a big pal of our Tone of TM wants Pennington. I think he'll get him.

Pennington wouldn't get in front of Reda and Ricketts based on Saturday's performance

probably need to prepare for reda to miss games through either injury or rest im guessing thats who mowbray was talking about sat when he said certain players struggle to play 3 times in a week and im hopeful aaron martin will move on pennington would be a good option to have

Interesting you should say that I saw him heading towards the ground via the car park by the casino at about 2:40 on Saturday I assumed he was working as a scout for someone.
