Have they really put him in there? I haven't seen the team or anything but if he's been put in midfield I don't understand it. Like you said, didn't look comfortable there at all for United. He's an excellent centre back though.

Will you guys get with it - he plays for United - that's all that matters.

It's not though is it. He's one of the best centre backs in the country, there on merit. I don't understand the midfield thing but I think it's a bit unfair to say he's just there because he plays for United. Terry and Ferdinand are getting on now, nowhere near the players they used to be. In fact, I'm happy to think there's players like Jones, Smalling and Welbeck actually coming through. Add to that Wilshere, Chamberlain and Gibbs and I think we'll have a decent team in a few years. Considering we'll still have the likes of Hart, Richards (Don't get why he's not in the squad by the way) and Rooney as well.

Think it says it all about the England set up when Darren Bent played for Sunderland, never got a look in. Moves to Villa and has been selected for every squad hes been available for. Players at 'fasionable' clubs will always been picked over others. Another reason while England will win nothing.

By fashionable you mean better, yeah? Yes, play players on merit but don't be so blinkered by a dislike of a team to feel that those players aren't at united because they're better than other players in their position. I'm sure Bent was getting in the squad when he was at Sunderland?

The other thing is that those players at the better clubs play together each week and so know each others games. Continuity can be good, as proven with Spain who mostly play with players from fashionable teams.

To be fair, the debate was about Jones in midfield - which I do think is a strange decision. But having him in the squad isn't, in my opinion.

Bent hardly got picked - I know because my mate (who's a sunderland fan) never stops whinging about it (i'll find out later how many times he got picked when available). Players should be picked on merit, not passed achievements or if they play at the same club as someone else.

The continuity issue doesn't matter. We have played with the same 6-7 core players for the past 8 years and achieved nothing, haven't even looked like achieving anything if the truth be known. The players are not good enough as a collective team, They are a bunch of individuals wanting to be the star players, there is nobody in the team who is able to bind them together by doing all the 'dirty' work, Capello is tactially inept, unwilling to try new things.

Picking Jones like you said isn't an issue because hes a quality centre back. Having him play in midfield is the issue.

I didn't mean the continuity as in always the same players in the England team - I meant from club football to International football. Like Spain have mainly Barca players with a few sprinklings of Real players! I agree, players should be picked on merit, but surely those players are playing in the bigger teams mostly on merit?

Capello's a different issue. The obvious choice to succeed him is Redknapp, except he's now facing charges of tax evasion which, I think, is why the FA let Venables go after Euro 96?

Oh ok, don't think it'll ever be like that in this country, La Liga is a two horse race and it will always be that way with the way TV money is given out etc. For the most part, yes players are at the bigger clubs as they are better/more consistent, but how many times have we seen the likes of Rooney, Beckham, Gerrard contiue to get picked over smaller club players when their club form is poor or they are recovering from injury. It's all about the names and the image.

8 of Barca's full strength starting line up are Spanish, and they are pretty much the best players in the world in their position, and start 99% of the time unless injured. They mostly all came through the same coaching system and play in positions that suit them.

Out of the English teams last season on 25% of the players were English. We've also got an abundance of players that play in similar positions for their club side and we try and make them fit into a system because they are 'star' players. Both lampard and gerrard thrive in a central midfield 3 where they are essential playing in the hole behind a front man, neither play as an orthodox central midfield player but we continually played them because of their status. You could argue that Rooney also thrives playing in the hole behind the striker - so in essence we have had 3 players that like playing in the same part of he pitch but trying to make them fit.

I have no problem with jones being in the squad, I have an issue with playing him out of position. He could do a 'Henderson' tonight when the balls are being pinger around him. I hope he doesn't.

Let's not build up another young talented player to be our next saviour.

He did do well indeed. He looks like he is going to be a future England captain. Seems to have all the attributes to be a top footballer.

He wouldn't even be in the squad if he was still at Blackburn - a dozen games for united and he's an England international.
