Pictures of Cov in the past and Coventry Pubs (1 Viewer)

Okay guys. First of all, I have to say many thanks to Red Salmon for sending me a handful of (original) photos of a few old Coventry pubs.
I recognised them all straight away as they were all within a few hundred yards of each other in Hillfields (where I once lived for many years).
I've put them up as thumbnails and also the current location (or rather, where they once stood in most cases!) These are, The Alma Tavern, The Fiveways Tavern, The Gate Hangs Well, and the Three Shuttles. The Three Shuttles is still there, I believe. There was also a picture of the Rose & Woodbine, but I know that's still there for all to see.

Way too many pubs closing or getting knocked down for land for houses now

I blame poncey blokes who want to meet their mates in starbucks for coffee instead of a game of pool and a pint and the fact pubs are just too expensive compared to Tesco or One Stop.

Its purely the cost of a pint in a pub, £3 to buy a pint in a pub and £1 to buy a tin of Lager in a supermarket.
The government must change its tax policy and reduce the tax on the pub trade but levy it on supermaket sales so the prices are close to equal.
Trouble is the supermarkets have more clout than the pub trade and lots on pubs are owned by brewers, so it isn't in their interest to raise taxes beer or lager sales.
The British way of life screwed by commercial pressures once again.

I think other factors come into play but this is the overriding one of them all.

Agree completely. If you buy 48 cans in a supermarket you should pay approximately 48 times as much tax as you do for a pint in a pub.

I also think the smoking ban didn't help. I'm now a non-smoker, but I used to enjoy a ciggie or a small cigar with a pint. Now people have to go outside. I know it's much healthier though and that can only be a good thing.

I played for the Albany Sunday league team on and off for 10 years. Good times, the bulk of it we would meet in the City Arms before and after games as we were all banned from the Albany. Always thought the place was an overpriced shit hole.

the weekend late bar and disco they had about 10 years ago was superb. Absolutely mental.

I used to quite like the Albany for an occasional visit in my youth - the pool room upstairs always felt a bit dicey though.

I went in there last year and you could see it was on its last legs unfortunately - run down and not overly friendly I felt. And yes, it did always look slightly run down, but that was different somehow.

As an aside, it's one of only two wedge-shaped pubs that I can recall in Cov. Any takers for the other one?

Just speaking from round my me. The malt shovel is indeed a therapy center for massage and tarrot medium readings etc and the black horse has been sold I believe it nothing ever seems to be done with it.

Also nearer me, the rainbow is my local in allesley village and obviously that's my favourite pub in coventry as I'm biased. Down the road you have the elms which is a harvester but think it was a brewers fayre before and opposite again you have the tollgate on the holyhead road. That place is just so run down and horrible I can hardly believe it's still standing. Also not so far away is the minstrel boy on buckingham rise which is a hole and I think for sale. Gets no business. Shame really as it could be good and then slightly other side to me you have the vale in eastern green which is a bit old school still especially on a Sunday.

I do agree with the pub trade it has been completely killed by huge taxes and no smoking. The price of a pint is anywhere between 3-4.50 and that's expensive and it's a pound a tin in the supermarkets so yes it's not hard to work out what has happened. A bottle of vodka is around 10 pound in the shop where as 4 shots of vodka is the same money in a pub which isn't even quarter of the bottle. It's a dying trade and taxes and prices are only going up. Really sad

Bugger, I'd completely forgotten about The Forresters - must have walked past it hundreds of times on the way to and from HR!

In truth I was thinking about The Motor Hotel, the one that vow pictured above. Goes to show that the old memory is fading I guess... now, where did I leave my spectacles.

Sorry mate, but that's bollocks. I probably pop in there every couple of weeks for a quiet pint or two and everyone in there seems pretty civil to me.

Maybe if you go in there with the attitude they're all arseholes that's how you get treated in return. Half the lads I know in there wouldn't know how to spell 'pretentious' let alone be it. They're just regular blokes having a pint with their mates.

So no offence like, but I think you're talking rubbish...

On the contrary, it's smoking that killed pubs. Once it was publicized that second-smoke caused lung cancer, who would be stupid enough to linger in a smoke-filled room?
When you think about it drinking alcohol and smoking are two of the most unhealthy things you can do.
But it is a shame that the social aspects of pubs has been lost. They just failed to adapt to the times.

In my local down south it's something like £4.50 for a pint. It's hardly a surprise that so many pubs are closing, especially the more traditional ones and there just seems to be a lot of wanky chain pubs left. I think the UK has the second highest amount of alcohol duty behind Ireland and be surprised to see it become the highest over the next couple of years.

I also read an article that more and more young people are turning their backs on alcohol and choosing to live a healthier life style and post shite on Instagram. They reckoned that those around my age ( born in 1984) could have been the last generation to drink as much as others. It has definitely changed in that respect I think, too.

It's all about your own experiences and mine in that place have been poor.

Would also say my mate recently played a gig up there and I said my thoughts on the place and he was saying that he thought it was just him and he couldn't understand it.

Maybe it's just the North/South Coventry divide.

Fair enough, I appreciate it's all about opinion. I think it's the 'full of aresholes' line that wound me up here, that would presumably include some of the people I know that I consider friends. I'm not disputing that I'm an arsehole, obviously - there's too much evidence to for me to argue against that. But prententious, moi?

Thanks for posting these houch.
We used to park in the car park at Gulson rd hospital when we went up highfield road.
As a side note my dads older sister was born there in 1933 but died same year. And dad had his leg set there during the war years when he broke it playing in bombed out houses.

None taken but like duffer says it really isn't. I'm not part of a clique there and wouldn't want to be. You get a few grant it who sit in the corner in their spot if you like but guessing most pubs have that. I've never known anyone to get questioned or anything like that. It's a traditional friendly pub and they really do funky food like kangaroo steaks etc.

I love going into pubs and sitting in what is known as "Harry's seat" or "Bert's seat" or whoever the local regular is. I couldn't give a toss who's seat they claim it is. I'll sit there and let them try to move me! Twats! :emoji_angry:

Like I say I can only base it on my own experiences and the few times I have been in there I have found it very cliquey and I wouldn't return again in a hurry but it pretty much is each to their own.

This is a long shot guys, but there's one pub I don't have a picture of, that I'd love to have. Who remembers 'The Jubilee' in Swanswell Street? It opened in 1977 for the Queens Silver Jubilee and closed soon after in 1992, just 14 years. I know it had a lot of problems but it's a shame it didn't last long. So, my quest is, as you may have guessed, is to source a picture of 'The Jubilee' pub, Swanswell Street.

Is that the one that was pretty close to Lady Herbert's Garden? I thought it was called the Swanswell?
