Someone on here, I forget who, possibly SBT, said this season our players hadn’t progressed as individuals. I think the last few games have put that to bed.

Wilson, no longer rooted to his line, claiming things and coming out to snuff out danger, improved distribution.

Sheaf, looks another level above when he’s fit, now starting to get into goal scoring positions and look threatening a lot more as well.

Hamer, calmed his temperament and become a better player for it. Added to goal contributions as well.

Eccles, gone from third choice RWB and fifth choice CM to a credible first team player.

Vik, started looking up a lot more, bringing others into play and assisting a lot more as the season has gone on.

Allen, another backup who has become a first team regular, added goals to his game as well.

Agree mostly but Hamer has always scored well for his position and Sheaf getting forward more is due to the formation change.

Without doubt Ben Wilson

He scored three last season, five the season before fair enough. But his goal involvements have been 8, 13 and 15 so far this season, and is back him to get a couple more before the season is over.

Personally I think it’s obvious that Vik, Wilson, Allen and Eccles have all kicked on this year.

I alluded to this in another thread, but the absence of some other players has given growing space. We're a lot healthier for it.

Moore has come on very well indeed, no league goals conceded since August and looking great on the bench as a result.

I remember the post that @shmmeee is referring to now!

It’s not just a case of who leaves the club - there are hardly any players on our books whose value/stock has notably increased this season. Plenty more whose value has plunged.

This was from January and it’s not held up especially well - although in my defence I was talking more about the squad as a whole, and more about player value rather than player ability. But yeah, since then Wilson, Allen and Eccles have gone up a gear, and with the injuries we’ve had, thank god.

Bidwell is worth a shout here too by the way. He’s become a really solid lwb.

It’s still a position I think we could improve for next year but not a concern to me if It’s Bidwell there again next season.

I think he should be retained and a more attack minded alternative brought in to give us flexibility.

Our staff have done an incredible job with these players. I would say every single player has either improved or put in a position that gets the best out of the individual. We certainly are a club that develop's and both player and squad.

Its clear messaging and clear instruction of what is expected and needed to create results. MR is very at being obvious in his desire to improve every aspect of the club.

Personally I think for pure impact Hamer has brought control and consistency to his game and is frequently bossing games now. But Wilson, Allen, and Vik all have a shout IMO.

100%. I've always been quite critical with Hamer because he has always had the technique & ability but "control" is exactly what he lacked. Tried to play smash mouth football, always at 100mph, forcing Hollywood passes etc. & his quality was inconsistent because of it. Positionally he was caught out frequently, pressing too high & easily bypassed along with the obvious misplaced aggression & petulance. The yellow cards were the symptom of this.

Now it's like a switch has gone off in his head.
He's retained just the right amount of "edge" & aggression, positionally now much more aware, wins the ball back consistently rather than incessant fouling & literally dominates games. His range of passing is still excellent but he now chooses the right option more often.
A truly wonderful player who has just about everything.

I actually thought he did pretty well last season too, tbf.

In terms of improvement, has to be Wilson. Barely makes the crazy decisions he used to, doesn't do his jittery stuttering, saves shots.

Wilson 100%. He was a bit try hard origially when he got in the team like he was trying to prove a point, but since he's realised he's number 1 he's thrived

Wilson. I'd not have felt at all happy going into the season kbowing he'd play most of it but next season that wouldn't bother me. His kicking needs work but his overall goalkeeping has really improved. Notable mentions for quite a few members of the squad though, Sheaf, Hamer and Gyokores have all improved important aspects of their game. Doyle will really have benefitted from his season with us, shame we are unlikely to get the benefit of that next season but that's the downside of loans i suppose.

You can't just single out one or two. The entire squad have been called upon this season and everybody has offered more. Yes, we've had some slips but even World Cup winners have them too.

Wilson, the youngsters in the back 5, midfield and the strikers have all come on in leaps and bounds this year. I genuinely couldn't put a finger on any one player who has stood still or fallen away.

And for that, we have to thank the management team. Mark, Adi, Dennis and all the coaches, physios and those who don't ever get mentioned (Deidre the tea lady at Ryton (well, I hope that's her name ).

Whatever happens in the next 4 games, this has been a season to truly enjoy being Sky Blue.

I think his shooting has improved a lot over the season TBH. He’s hitting it cleaner and getting into shooting positions better as well as not passing the buck so often.

He hits it well from the edge of the box in fairness, the long range shots look more threatening. In front of goal he seems to spoon it, well he has in the last 2-3 games. In his defence he used to be a centre back before becoming a holding midfielder so it's probably not something he specifically works on.

Even going back to the League 1 days nearly every player has improved under Robins and the coaching of Viveash. Look at Fadz. Slightly dodgy start in L1 but then was great. He was a calamity (like most of the defence) for our first season back in the Championship but since then has moved up a couple of levels.
The main ones as already mentioned though are Wilson, Sheaf, and Eccles.
I remember Wilson's league debut v Norwich, first season back. He had already thrown a clanger in a cup game at Watford as I recall so was fearing the worst. He did concede a pen, but made some brilliant saves too which Marosi wouldn't of stopped. There was something there, that was for sure. He's stopped the stuttering when the ball is passed back to him, which was very unsettling and apart from the 2nd Norwich goal at the CBS this season he hasn't made any costly errors.

Sheaf has always struck me to be à confidence player. It’s a viscous circle: when there is a potential shot on, he’ll more often than not elect to pass and more often than not the chance lessens. Result: fans vent their frustration and his confidence dips.

He seems to have improved his dallying on the ball and now needs to develop the self belief to just have a crack. Once he does, he’ll be a heck of a player.

Ben WIlson for me would be the player we've seen progress the most.
At the start of the season, goalkeeper would have been a priority position for improvement for the transfer window, but I'd be quite happy to go into next season continuing with Wilson and focus on other areas of the pitch instead.
Assuming Moore is off though, we could do with another keeper to at least challenge for that starting shirt and who can do a job when called upon.

Gyokeres, Hamer, Sheaf and Allen have obviously all improved too, but I think they were relatively steady players anyway last season
