Harry Potter film 'breaks box office records' in US

The final Harry Potter movie has broken the record for the biggest first day box office sales in the US and Canada, according to studio estimates.

The film's distributor, Warner Bros, reports that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, made $92.1m (£57m) in North America on Friday.

The previous single-day record belonged to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which made $72.7m (£45m) on its opening day.

The Potter film is the eighth movie in the franchise.

The seventh book in JK Rowling's popular series was split into two films.

Fans around the world queued for hours to be among the first to see the film.

The entire Potter film series has so far earned more than £4bn worldwide, not including the final film's takings so far.

It has been 10 years since the first movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was released.

It made stars of its young cast, Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Has anyone seen the film yet? I saw it last night and I would give it 8/10, some great action and really enjoyable. I hate the hollywood ending but it's the same as she did it in the books so you can't change it. Overall the films have got better as they progressed as they take into account that the audience has grown with the characters and it's a credit to the British film industry and the actors that they have been able to be made in such an honest manner.

We should be proud of such a global instsitution and its achievements and we should that JK Rowling for all she has done.

I tried watching the first movie when it was on ITV. Gave up after ten minutes and the first commercial break.

I can't blame you, as an adult that first film is very childish and defines the movie genre of 'mild peril'.

I urge all you nah sayers to try the books though, you won't regret it.

I can't be the only Potter fan who is on here surely??!!

I'm a big fan, I read the first 4 books at a young age but then got into watching the films definitely made the films more interesting when I didn't know what was going to happen.

Thankyou sir, the books are better than the films in my opinion. You should find the time to read them even if you do know what is going to happen, there is loads of stuff from the books that are left out cus they don't have the time..

Nope, you're not the only one mate. I watched them growing up and thought it would be stupid if I didn't watch them all. The books are miles better, but the films are decent. They have certainly got better as the years have gone on.

I went to see the very first Potter film all those years ago. There was me and Mrs Jarse, another couple and a single bloke in the entire cinema. After the film I said to the missus that it didn't appeal to me and it wouldn't take off!

Anyone want any investment advice?

I wish that had happened. It would have ruined the whole fraqnchise for the kids lol.

For all you Harry Potter geeks, I wanted it to end up that the prophecy was actually about Neville and it was he who had to kill V in the end.

I was disappointed with the film, thought that Hogwarts being attacked could have been better. Still good though
I was excited about The Dark Knight Rises trailer though

I keep meaning to check it out but have had no spare time over the last couple of days. I read the Amazing Spiderman teaser got leaked today too, got to check them out.

Out of interest what else were you expecting? I loved it! most of the film was like the battle in Helm's Deep from LOTR- TT.
