Pressley going for 5 - 3 - 2 (1 Viewer)

I think the reason why SP seems so excited is because his football philosophy is based on the German style and as they won the WC his belief is stronger than ever. I think he will play 5-3-2 because it is the most adaptable during a game. I know it sounds weird but for players to switch from playing a 4-4-2 to a 5-3-2 is a big difference compared to 5-3-2 to 4-4-2.

5-3-2 with our players also suits their style especially as we have about 4 new wingers. In SP we trust

How does 5-3-2 help wingers?

you can effectively play with 4 wing backs and two holding midfielders

LB/WINGBACK ----- CENTREBACK ---- CB/HOLDING MF ---- CENTREBACK -----RB/WINGBACK

--------------LB/WINGBACK ------ CENTRAL MIDFIELDER -------- RB/WINGBACK ----------------

----------------------------STRIKER ----------------------- STRIKER --------------------------------

Looks a great team laid out like that - if Sheff Utd line up as I expect, i.e.

GK

RB CH CH LB

M M M M

then I think we'll have them....

...unless they can pass the ball better than us and/or have better players.............

Didn't he go for 442 because he saw a German team play it successfully? The original plan was 4-5-1 I believe.

We don't have the players for 532 IMO.

Straight forward 442 with attacking full backs, suits the high energy, high press game. Those full backs have got to be up to it though, I wud worry for Clarke.

I think he'll go 442 but more conventional, with 2 proper widemen rather than relying on the fullbacks to give us width. we'll still play high tempo high press but without committing the fullbacks so much and leaving ourselves exposed. I really can't see us playing wingbacks.

I honestly don't think he'll play 4-4-2. It's too static and old fashioned for Pressleys football philosophy. I can see it being 4-2-3-1 or something like that.

He's talked up Miller as a player who works well as part of a strike partnership, so I can't see him going to one up front. Equally, the number of wide players we've brought in suggests we won't be going to a back 3/5.

Like stu, I reckon it will be a similar shape to last year, just with slightly more defensively-minded full-backs.

Are we assuming Miller will be first choice then?

He has to be at the moment!

In any case, it shows Pressley at least considers the 4-4-2 as an option. He's also talked about bringing in 3 more strikers, which to me is another indication that he's looking at playing 2 up front.

It's possible that he may look at the 4-2-3-1 as a second option, which I certainly would have no problem with. The more flexible the squad is, the better.

I wasn't talking about at the moment. I suppose we'll have more of an idea when we start playing friendlies.
