Remember it well, it's a shop now. There were, the one I'm talking about was on Gulson Rd, not the one in Keresley
Used to be my local when I lived on Manor House estate back in the dayGreen Man, Hall Green Rd, in the early seventies.
Haven't been in a pub for three years now.
Did it all the time .This makes me think, how many ofnyouused to do cov games then off to Brandon for the Stock cars/ speedway?
I remember doing it regularly as a kid, fucking loved it
We lived backing onto the Green Man, on Pearson Avenue. Could see the back garden of the pub from mum & Dad's bedroom window. All gone now. Just a block of flatsUsed to be my local when I lived on Manor House estate back in the day
Yep. Me too. Either Cov or City, then Brandon after a chippy tea from Wolston, calling in at my cousin's house over the road from there (the old Post Office and Bakery).Did it all the time .
Come on you Bees about time they were back at Brandon.
Very happy days
Brandon Oak?Late March to the end of the season and from the beginning of the next season it would be either a walk from Ernesford Grange or Highfield Road to Brandon, the smell as you walked through the bus and car park to the pits entrance was intoxicating.
Ferguson and Wallace to Ole Olsen and Mitch Shirra...what a way to spend your best days! Oh and a pit stop at the Binley Oak or the Roseycombe.
Manor House? Is that the bit of Bell Green around Almond Tree Ave etc? I've never heard that name before you seeUsed to be my local when I lived on Manor House estate back in the day

Wolston Chippy was the best in the midlands late 90s early 00s il die on that hill
Is that Martin Peters with him? This advert for pubs (not a specific pub, just pubs in general) by Bobby Moore lives in my head rent free
Used to be a designated Coventry Corporation bus route to Manor House, the bus service number unfortunately escapes me.Manor House? Is that the bit of Bell Green around Almond Tree Ave etc? I've never heard that name before you see
It was cracking. My cousin's son married the daughter of the owners too (Andrie). Never got free chips thoughWolston Chippy was the best in the midlands late 90s early 00s il die on that hill
You could almost build a house using blokes out of the Green Man on Friday/Saturdays it used to be full of Irish construction chaps a lot from the guild house over the road, brickies, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers whatever all top skilled blokes….and cheap.Green Man, Hall Green Rd, in the early seventies.

20a. It was a deviation down Windmill Rd off the 20 Longford and Bedworth route. Terminus was by the side of the Manor Guildhouse by Aldermans Green Road a few yards up from the Green Man. I used to use it regularly, or the 21 Lentons Lane/Aldermans Green opposite the GM, whichever turned up first.Used to be a designated Coventry Corporation bus route to Manor House, the bus service number unfortunately escapes me.
All true! Including my dad, an absolutely top-notch welder. You could almost build a house using blokes out of the Green Man on Friday/Saturdays it used to be full of Irish construction chaps a lot from the guild house over the road, brickies, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers whatever all top skilled blokes….and cheap.
Let’s see how many pubs we remember within walking distance of HR,I reckon there’s about twenty I’ll start with the Freemasons, the Old Red Horse and Ivy Cottage.
Stoke ex on Clay Lane too. It's funny thinking back to all of the pubs around Highfield Rd (as close to walk to as say the Wheatsheaf now) that you might have drank in on match day:
Sky Blue Tavern / Mercer's
Old Ball
Hastings
Red Horse
Stoke Con Club
Binley Oak
Brewer and Baker
Freehold (when did that close?)
Vauxhall Tavern (before my time)
Gosford Arms
Hertford Arms
Hand & Heart
Beer Engine
Hare & Hounds
Peacock
Same here although it was the Manor Farm Estate. IIRC the block of flats was called Manor House.Used to be my local when I lived on Manor House estate back in the day
The block on Manor Farm (1 - 1.5 miles away from the area described) was called John something house, then was used as student accommodation known as Caradoc Hall. Not sure what it is called now.Same here although it was the Manor Farm Estate. IIRC the block of flats was called Manor House.
Outside of the radius I'd made in my headHope and Anchor is one I’m surprised hasn’t been mentioned.
With a certain George Curtis serving behind the bar, like you mentioned it was absolutely rammed.Surprised no one has mentioned strikers at the ground, always a guy in there selling GMK fanzine.
Used to get packed in both bars.
Was talking with a mate and we totting up pubs from the Swanswell to the Rose & Woodbine in North Street in a circle around HR and we reckon there’s around 23 plus we think half a dozen clubs, all packed on a match day and most the boozers run ironically by no nonsense Irish chaps. We reckon there are just two still open
These days, 2 pre game, 1 half time and 3 after. Then home with a curry and missus moaning at me for falling asleep 9 ish. Text book SaturdayAll this talk of pre match pubs makes me wonder, in these days of the CBS and the pubs around CV6……how many drinks do people partake in before games these days and what time do they start on a Saturday 3 pm ?! We are normally in our favourite watering hole for 12 and I usually have 4 pints but managed to sneak in a 5th v Hull.
I’d forgot that club think it might have been by Lucas Aerospace some where behind the Brewer & BakerAnyone remember the Lucas Club?
