Of the squad right now who is actually of the quality needed to play for a promotion winning side, for me:

Start:
- Dovin
- MvE
- Grimes
- Sheaf
- Rudoni
- Wright

Bench:
- Thomas
- Kitching
- Torp
- Allen
- EMC
- Sakamoto
- Simms

This means that from our current squad in my opinion 6 would start and 7 benched from the 26 listed on the CCFC website of the first team, this means just over 50% others are good players to have around like a Lati, Wilson and Eccles. Then the prospects like Bassette and Rapha are good to wait in the fringes or get loaned for gametime. Which means we definitely need 2xCBs, 2xLBs, 1xRW, 1xLW in order to compete at the top in my opinion and obviously a little more depth but some of the squad that didnt make the cut for me could obviously do a job at this level as they have done this year.

I’d be interested to see other people’s opinions on this concept

Think that’s about right. If we wanted money no object to make a go of autos next year we’d need 5-6 starters of a similar quality to those listed.

EMC more than capable for our system once back to full sharpness. 2 games and everyone forgotten how good he was pre-injury. Probably Thomas too. With his aerial threat in both boxes, it's worth the odd mistake and he still has defensive improvement in him at his age.

I think Thomas could go to another level with the right partner next to him like we saw with McNally/Doyle and Fadz.

Can’t see us being able to build a top two squad for as long as parachute payments are in place (unless we get a wealthy owner willing to throw a lot on it). As such the ambition would have to be a top six (closer to 4 than 6 mind).

Starting

Dovin
MVE
Thomas
Grimes
Sheaf
EMC
Rudoni
Wright

Bench

Sakamoto
Simms
Kitching
Torp
Eccles

My opinion is that you really don’t need everyone to be of that quality. Morale and work ethic mean more. See Luton two years ago.
Same , you wouldn’t say Ipswich had quality all over, bit Like Burnley solid keeper and back 4 the rest of the team aren’t brilliant ,

I would say the following in this order

To start
Milan
Wright
Dovin
Sheaf (if last seasons version can be resurrected)

Squad players
Rudoni
Torp
EMC
Simms
Thomas
Eccles

I would say no based on physicality alone
Grimes
Saka
Dasilva

The rest wouldn't be up to it beyond emergencies.

We’re close, the main thing we need to cut out is conceding really poor goals. A top end CB alongside Thomas would do a world of good and if you can a LB thats li

As things stand right now, our summer shopping list looks something like:
1) GK
2) LB
3) CB

They’re the 3 positions you’d want to improve immediately. There are 2-3 positions you’d look at but in my view, the team is looks quality.

Thomas has been one of our best performers for a while imo

To win promotion?

We are 4th in the table since Lampard’s appointment. So the current squad is certainly good enough to get playoffs. And they’re a bit of a lottery.

Saying we need 5 or 6 new starters is ridiculous.

No its not a need its just my opinion on what we would hypothetically need to win Automatic promotion, I think the current squad if fully fit is good enough for playoffs its just that next step

And yet his mistakes have led to so many goals. Once again on Saturday, his pass directly to an opposition player cost us.

Double edge sword as do feel his concentration lets him down but he also won us several points like against Stoke or QPR. Think an experienced CB next to him would do a lot for his development

All players are going to make a shite pass at some point especially in midfield but then the opposition should have a difficult task to get behind the defence not cruise past the fuckers like they are not there, so definitely a very good centre back commanding the area and someone who is capable playing on the left instead of someone seeing danger and thinking they are watching from the stands then realise 'ohh shit' I should be trying to defend that !!!

Shopping list for next season is, IMO:

- 6 month loan keeper
- First choice left back
- Experienced CB
- Backup RB
- CM if Allen goes. I’d like someone with a bit of physicality.
- RW to compete with Saka.
Agree on the Centre midfielder, we need someone with a bit of physicality and a bit of an enforcer type.

Andrews might be more than capable of being in and around it next year

Need a season long keeper. No guarantee Dovin is back for December let alone playing at full tilt

You need to go one step further and sign someone. Collins/Wilson as a long term number 2 just isn’t the best option.

We also have to consider the possibility that Dovin may not come back the same. Quite a low risk you’d think but another promising GK vying for the number 1 shirt is a good thing imo.

Which one was that?
Ah, my mistake, it was grimes. However, his passing is a failing in his game. If he corrects that, he’ll be a v good player. I’m not sure a better player alongside him will help with that.

Yeah I think he does give the ball away a bit but that's the nature of the modern game, be brave with the ball. Defensively I think he's very strong, 1:1 and aerially.

Players develop. Some get better with each season (see Dovin, Vic and Gus who started slowly then got much better over time). Some you would think will get less influential (see Godden).
One would hope Hadji, MVE will get much better.
EMC, Simms, Rudoni, Eccles, Thomas and Kitch have potential that may be realised.
Sheaf may recapture his form, but injury may have scuppered his further improvement.
Bidders and Allen are getting on, but Fadz still improved at their age.
Tatsu, Binks, JDS, BTA and Torp need top quality consistency. Jury out so far.

We gave Wilson a new contract 5 minutes ago, doubt we'll sign one permanently.

Probably as a 3rd choice keeper because I can’t see us keeping both Wilson and Collins past this summer.

We shouldn’t assume Dovin will come back and carry on his good form. Reminds me of the days when we were perpetually waiting for Jodi Jones to recover from his injuries when assessing our transfer needs.

A 6 month loan exposes us if Dovin doesn’t recover in time/isn’t the same when he returns and a 12 month loan for a promising GK will expect to be number one which potentially forces Dovin out.

I don’t think it’s an accident there were reports we were after another young Swedish league GK shortly after the Sheff U game.
