Retiring shirts (1 Viewer)

Watching the West Ham - Spurs game, they mentioned that the Hammers have retired Bobby Moore's shirt so no other player will wear his number 6. I'm not sure about following this custom, but it got me wondering if we have any legends - true, indisputable legends - who would merit having their numbers retired.

The one candidate I can think of right now is Oggy, who won the cup and has put in decades of service - though I realise some may not agree. There have been other great players in my time watching City, but they tend to only be here for a few seasons so it is debatable whether you can identify them with the Sky Blues more than any other club. I know some speak very positively about some of our players in the 60s an 70s, but I didn't see them personally so I'm not really in a position to judge.

So my question to the rest of you is: If we were in the business of retiring the shirts of truly great players, is there any player who has made such a huge contribution to this club that they would deserve to have that honour?

Yeah. I don't mean to be morbid, but the only way I think it would happen at a club like ours now is if a player died (touch wood that doesn't happen).

In North American sports I think they often retire shirts within a few years of the player retiring. So I don't think they have to be dead (although it does make things a bit easier because a club can feel more confident it wouldn't face the embarrassment of taking the shirt down again if someone was later found to have done something bad).

Yeah if we retired all shirts worn by City players who have died on the pitch over the years we'd by up to 4 digits on the back of the shirts by now.

As a centre forward, I would imagine Bourton was number 9. Jim Brown suggests that was his number too.

If I remember rightly, when I started watching footy (longer ago than I care to remember!) all players in a team wore the numbers 1 - 11. There was only one substitute allowed and he wore numer 12, so players numbers from the past should be easily identified from the position they played, i.e. centre forward, inside left, inside right, outside right etc....... Numbers started from the back and ended up with 9 for the CF, and 10 and 11 for the inside right and left (can't remember which way round). No names on the back either! And no sponsors names!
