Retro City... (1 Viewer)

It's fathers day today and i've just been around to visit my old man, who is an ex City player. That's his picture on the left, taken from a matchday programme in the 50's.

I asked him if he saw the England game the other night and he said something like "I don't like watching the modern game, all that passing it backwards etc" . He says that a lot, especially after watching the city the last few seasons. Of course he's in the bar after the game with a few of the other old players and they talk about how the game was more exciting in their day when they played attacking football...

He talked about how city need to find a new coach "Harrison is probably an ideal Premiership coach but City need to be coached to play a different way to get out of League 1"

So i suggested, that.......

Instead of City appointing a new modern coach, that he and a few of the ex players from the 50's and 60's do the job, and see if we can get results playing "the old way" including......

  • 50's style kit, with long shorts.
  • No more 4-4-2 It's 2-3-5 with Inside right's and Left half back's.
  • Fans with rattles.
  • Real leather balls for all home games.
Imagine the PR and marketing opportunities...bigger crowds...maybe revenue from televised home games (in black & white)...

Would it work?:thinking about:

Weren't the fifties our lowest ebb?

"The post-war years brought troubled times, Storer left for Birmingham City in 1945 and returned in 1951 but his ageing side were relegated to Division Three South in 1952.
That decade witnessed many false dawns before the team embarked on the slide, which touched rock bottom in 1958 with membership of the newly formed Division Four. Fortunately, one season was enough to clamber out of the league's basement."

Mind you, being an attack minded person I always thought of it as 5-3-2 rather than 2-3-5....
